The Coroner’s inquest in regard to the death of tlie child, John Thomas Robinson, who died oil the 2nd ilist., was re-opened yesterday. Sergt. King on behalf of the police intimated there was no further evidence to tender. The verdict of the Coroner (Mr Evans) was in accordance with the medical testimony, that the cause of death was shock and heart failure as a result of a severe convulsion probably induced by the child eating green fruit.

The funeral of the late Mr William .McKay took place yesterday afternoon, and was followed by many friends. The Rev. Knowles Smith conducted the service at the graveside.

The death occurred last evening at six o’clock at the Grey River Hospital of .Miss Gwendoline Orr, elder daughter of Alt's Ellen Orr, of Tainui St., Greymoutli. The deceased young lady, who was only eighteen and a-lialf years of age, had been a patient at the Hospital only since Saturday evening, when slip w.as admitted with an attack of double pneumonia. She was a member of the clerical stall’ of Mark Sprot and Co,, and she was about the same day as that on which she was admitted to tbo Hospital. She had a very bright personality, and a large number of friends will extend her bereaved relatives the sim-erest .sympathy in their sad loss.

A well-known and respected Blackball resident. Mrs Harriet Anderson, died yesterday alter a brief illness, at the residence of her son. Mr Maurice Anderson, of Blackball, She was horn 77 years ago at French Pass, Akaron. She was deceased by her husband, Mr J. C. Anderson, ami also by her son. Air Charles Anderson. She is survived by three sons and two daughters. The daughters are Mrs K. Hales, of North Canterbury, ami Aliss Rugbv Anderson (of Nelson), ami the sons are: Colvin (Christchurch), Joseph (at, prosent an inmate of the Wjollington Hospital, suffering from a broken nock, the result of an accident), and Maurice (Blackball).

Those travelling by tlie motor service from Arthur’s Pass speak highly of tbo floral display in the higher regions by tHi' mountain flowers now in generous bloom. A passenger by Newmans Motors on Tuesday, described the trip as a delightful one, and the view full of interest. The grandeur of the Otira Gorge never palls. At present the flowers add to tho beauty of the surroundings and make the trip one of very great pleasure. The road is described as generally good. A short section was under repair, hut apart from that the going was excellent and cars make good time. Some cars are going right through to Christchurch, the road generally being in very fair order.

In the course of an inspection of a mail liner in the Napier roadstead, a newspaper man, delving in the mysteries of the big ship’s up-to-date dairy, learned one of the inner secrets—bow ship’s cream is made. An obliging official of the boat explained the process, b.v which 51 b of dried milk are added to three times that amount of butter and several gallons of water. The whole is then heated to 110 degrees and thoroughly mixed in a rotating cylinder. It is then put through a separator, and lo and behold, cream comes out of one spout and milk issues from the other. Two minutes later passengers in the commodious dining saloon of the vessel are having cream on their sweets, even though the boat may be many weeks from the nearest land.
