LAKE KANIERI

GROWING IN POPULARITY

Lake Kanieri appears to he growing very rapidly in popularity. As a weekend resort it is coming into favour, while on Sundays and holidays many private parties visit the resort and visit less public parts and enjoy all the pleasures with their young of a pn oic outing. More weekend implies arc being erected, and with the extension of the reading, the public patronage to Lake Kanieri will grow more pronounced.

The extension of the road from Hans liny towards Dorothy waterfall is proceeding steadily. Something over a mile of road is under construction. On Sunday a Ford lorry reached threequarters of the way, but at intervals in between parties were picnicking, there being several cars with family gather, ings, including several visiting motors. The read promises to be a very popular one. There are ideal spots for picnics, with a shoaling beach suitable for children bathing. The roadway passes through the bush in places, and there is quite a pretty outlook on the lake, which the highway fringes. The further this section of the road is extended the more popular it will lie. There arc about nine men working on the line of road and a good job is being made of the construction work. The line lias been cleared for nearly a mile, and formed for more than half the distance, while the metalling of tiie first section is well in hand. The road is being made of good sound material. Beyond the end of the road works is the Doroothy Falls track which penetrates through to the pretty water Ia 11 about five miles distant in all by road and track.

The passenger launch ’’ Dorothy ” plies regularly on the lake to and from the Falls landing, or round the lake on aquatic trips. The launch has been fitted with a new and more powerful engine and is running well. Some private launches and speed boats are also on the water frequently, and when manoeuvring supply a very animated stone. The boating on the lake is certainly one of its chief attractions.

Round to Sunny Right also the lakeside is well patronised. There is a movement to extend the road along that route also to a point where more room will be afforded for parking ears. This can be done for a nominal expense ami when the access is improved will supply a reason for greater patronage in that quarter also. The main road from Hokitika to Lake Kanieri is in very passable order just now. Another section of the road is being widened beyond the former site of Taminelli’s sawmill and win link up with the McKay’s bend widening, greatly improving the lower section of the road. The road improvements generally being carried must tend to greatly popularise the route. During the summer season a public service might he run profitably on the route, and if run in conjunction with me launch could fix a reasonable inclusive fare, which would induce much additional traffic at week-ends. With the road facilities now available there is every attraction for the. motorist, while no doubt the general public would patronise any local service provided for the general convenience.
