GREYMOUTH JUBILEE

PUBLIC MEF.TTXC AT TOWN JI.VI.L Last evening at the Town Hall a public meeting was held in connection with the Greymouth Jubilee celebrations which are to be. held in Feb-

ruary next. The Mayor of Creymouth (Mr .1. W. Greenslade) was accompanied by Messrs W. 11. Partitt, C. H. Bose, Denton, Keating and others. There was a small but representative gathering present, Mr C. A. Perry presiding. The Mayor (Mr Perry) extended a welcome to the Mayor of Groymoutli (Mr J. W. Greenslade) and the represent Mtive gathering that had accompanied him expressing the pleasure they had at his visit and then calling on Mr Greenslade to address the gathering. ;

Mr J. \V. Greenslade (Mayor of Groymoutli) said he was pleased to have received their welcome from the Mayor. They had come down to Hok- , it.ika to solicit their assistance for the Groymoutli Jubilee celebrations, lie was glad to have seen the subleader in the local paper which they welcomed as an expression of good will towards the movement. They were holding their birthday a little earlier than expected so as to have better weather and it was being held in February next. it. would last a week from February 2(ith to -March 3rd. They were getting out a very lino booklet in which was featured the Franz Josef Glacier. It was a booklet, that they would he very proud of. They wished to make arrangements for Hokitika to he suitably represented. There was no doubt that they would work together, the same as they had at the time of Westland’s jubilee. They hoped that the children at this eml would lie able to come up and visit the Fleet during the course of t.lio festivities, and join in with the. Greymouth children. There were many articles of historical interest that could be gathered together that would help to make a very attractive display. They wished this district to he well interested in the movement and in this they desired the assistance and best efforts in promoting the .success of I heir jubilee and in every way possible bringing people from outside to th" district. JTe would he glad to hear the views of those present on the mat ter.

Hon 11. Ij. Michel said" he lelt the meeting extended a hearty welcome to the Mayor of Greymouth and other visitors. He lelt perfectly sure that every endeavour would he inside at this etui to assure the success of the jubilee functions. Many people had told him in Wellington that they were coming down for the jubilee celebrations. Personally ho would he only too glad to make the Greymouth celebrations a success. They remembered with pleasure the assistance given by Greymouth in connection with the F.xhibiton. He had pleasure in moving that those present form into a Committee to assist in every way possible the successful carrying out of the celebrations.

Mr d. A. Murdoch (County Chairman) said lie was glad to he able to support the proposal. Me was glad to hear from Air Alichel that his old friend William Glenn was coming down, lie was an old schoolmate with him in the Grey school with others. He would do his utmost to further the movement. He congratulated them on the true citizenship they were exhibiting in pushing on the advancement of the town of Greymouth, which was a distinct credit to the Most Coast. He. wished them every success

and promised them every assistance in his power. The motion was agreed to.

The lion. .Michel pro|>osc‘d the Alavor he chairman and Messrs 1). .1. Evans and (I. Coles he joint lion secretaries. Seconded by Mr Murdoch and carried. It was resolved to ask Dr Teiclielniu.nii to arrange for a selection of suit able photographs and paintings to be loaned for display. Mr M’. 11. I’arfitt was delighted to ho present that evening. lie suggested that out of this public gathering it would be a good move to form a West Coast Advancement League. He felt the time was not far away when they would have a gold mining boom. They should all join to do their utmost to advance the best interests of the AVest Coast. It was resolved that the Hon 11. L. Michel and Mr Seddon, M.P., be asked to confer with the visiting Ministers in regard to the passing of a Validating Act to enable local bodies expenditure to be paid outside of the unauthorised expenditure. A general discussion took place on a number of matters in connection with the celebrations.

A suggestion was made that one of tho Hokitika executive should attend the Grcymouth executive meetings and so bo fully conversant with the progress of events. It. was resolved that an executive be set up consisting of the Mayor. Deputy-Mayor. Dr Teichelmann, County Chairman and secretaries. Mr Greenslnde returned thanks for the enthusiasm shown and the hearty promises of assistance.

A vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding terminated the meeting.
