HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FIUDAY, DECEMBEB 9th
The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present:—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, J. King, A. R. Eleock, D. J. Evans, G. Heinz, W. Jeffries, A. C. Armstrong, and Dr Teichelmann.
The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. The Mayor referred to the recent death of Mr John Coyle, who had on many occasions been a contractor under the Council and had at all times given faithful and excellent service. He moved that the Council forward to Mrs Coyle and family a letter conveying the deep sympathy of the Council in their bereavement. Seconded by Air J. King and carried in silence, members standing. From Puller Progress League urging that the Government be asked to reduce file charges for telephones.—Received ; to be supported. From State Alines Picnic Committee asking for use of Cass Square for the annual picnic on February 4th.—Received and request granted. From A. Naneekivell, stating the Vacuum Oil Coy. were responsible for the petrol tank.—Received ; consideration deferred. From Greymouth Jubilee Committee forwarding copy of journal.—Received.
From Hokitika School Committee, asking the Council to carry out tarsealing during the ’Xmas vacation.— Received; referred to Public Works Committee. AH Jeffries was in sympathy with the request if it did not interfere with the work of their staff. From P. Feron and Son Ltd., Christchurch, asking for the Council to restrict the activities of the Borough Inspector in connection with inspection of fish arriving in the town.—Received. The Inspector’s comment and letter from Reid and Gage upholding the Inspector’s action were also received. Air Heinz moved the action of the Inspector be endorsed. Seconded by Air Heenan and carried.
From Westland Hospital Day Committee. asking permission to make a street collection next day. Air Jeffries on the same behalf also requested to bold a sacred concert on Sunday evening.—Received. Both requests were granted. From Kanieri Electric Ltd. asking for increased approach accommodation to their premises. Weld Street.—Received ; referred to the Public Works Committee to attend to. From Newmans Motors Ltd. asking permission to concrete in front of their petrol tank at their own expense.—Received and. request granted. The Mayor moved that the dog tax fees for 1928 he fixed at 10s, with 2s Gu for cattle dogs. Seconded by AH Heenan and carried. From Manager of Abattoirs, reporting for November there were examined:—lß cows, 24 heifers, 56 bullocks, • 213 sheep, 18 lambs, 21 pigs. 17 calves. Fees for period £6O (same month last year £OS Is). —Received.
FOREAI AN’S REPORT. I beg to report the following work was carried out during the month : Drains.—Three chains of six inch earthenware pipes were laid in Stafford St. between Healey and Hall Sts. Five chains of nine inch pipes were laid in Stafford St. between Bealev and Fitzlyrbert Sts. and drainage connections across the footpatli to connect the different residences. A portion of Ben ley St. drain collapsed between Weld St. and Gibson Quay, also a portion of Sewell St. drain between Weld and Stafford Sts. These were repaired.
A Gully trap was put in near Cowie’s hotel, connecting with Sewell St. drain. Footpaths.—Curbing was put in at -McKay’s corner at the junction of Weld and Tailored Sts., the distance being about one and a-lialf chains. A crossing was put in at Mr Manzoni’s in Boa ley St.; also a crossing at the corner of Bealev and Stafford Sts. A road was cleared for a rubbish dump below the Council’s workshed. This should last for a considerable time if care is taken to keep the rubbish against the river wall. The fireplug was repaired in Hampden St. at the corner of Tancred St., and the pipe taken out of the well at .McGregor’s corner and re-bored. Twenty-three 18-inch and nine 1-foot pipes (concrete) were made. Leaks were repaired about the town and on the line to the Forks. Water in the reservoir averaged 7 feet for the month.
—Received. It was resolved to observe the usual office holidays at ’Xmas. AYATER COMM'ITEE’S REPORT. T have to report that the Waterworks Committee met on the oth instant to consider the'data and estimates of cost received from the various water-main vendors, and after due deliberation, it was resolved to obtain from the Hume Pipe Co. a further alternative estimate, so as to obtain a discharge of not less than 300 gallons a minute, and hv use of break pressure tanks to reduce the cost. AYlien this information is to hand, your Committee will make a full report to the Council. —Received. From Kanieri Electric Ltd., offering to nrovide pole and wire for light on Cass square..for £4, and would provide the light free. —Received ; and offer accepted with thanks ; location of light to be arranged by Reserves Committee.
Afr Heennn moved that the Public AVorks Committee he authorised to give road aceess in Livingstone Street to Afr Appleton.—Agreed to. On Afr Evans’ suggestion it was resolved to make a new crossing to the approach to St. Alary’s Church. Accounts amounting to £169 15s were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported receipts £6l 2s'6d; payments' £469 15s. bank credit balance £1033 5s sd; loan account credit £69 16s.—Received. The Finance Committee reported that medical opinion received stated it was inadvisable for Afr Andrewes to take up the duties of Town Clerk again and it had been resolved that leave be extended to 29th February and total salary during extension to be £2o. Received and adopted. On Dr Teichelmann’s suggestion it was resolved to have the inside of the morgue painted. The Council rose at 8.20 p.m.
