BENEFIT ENTERTAINMENT

A PRONOUNCED SUCCESS. There was a full house at the Princess Theatre last night to enjoy the elocutionary and dramatic entertainment tendered by Aliss Evelyn James, of Greymouth, and her local pupils as a benefit to the Hokitika Mental Hospital wireless fund. The entertainment began punctually and ran successfully right through, reflecting credit on till concerned. 'The presence of Air Lawn’s orchestra of some eight instruments assisted to add to the brightness of the evening, playing overtures to each part and between the scenes. Part one consisted of a pleasing costume play which revealed the love troubles 'of Princess Tenderheart, so named because of the delicate construction of her heart. 'File King was searching for a worthy son-in-law and Dr Sudease and a real Prince were the chief aspirants for the hand of the Princess, till a charming page with an effective love potion won the day and the heart that was now cracked of the Princess ; hut they lived happily ever after. Parts were well taken by -Misses Koeleen Wormington, Joy Ward, Dorothy Hughes, Violet lloss, Afarv AleGavin, Lilian Linklater and Sheila Keller and .Masters Pat Ale Gavin and Alan Coles. There were two scenes, and all the characters were in becoming costumes, the whole completing a pretty picture, and the playlet proved a pleasurable one.

Part two was a varied vocal, instrumental and elocutionary section, in which there were several notable items and all the performers were recalled. Some excellent work was done, reflecting credit on Miss James’ tuition. A very pleasing portion of the entertainment was the violin solos contributed by Aliss M. Coburn, of Greymouth. Here Comes the Dream Alan,” Aliss Cora Lynn; musical monologue “An Old Romance,” Aliss Sheila Keller; Shakespearean recitation “ King Henry’s Address to His Soldiers,” ATaster Alan Coles: humorous sketch “ The Aspiring Dishwasher,” Aliss Dorothy Hughes; vocal duet (Selected), Aliss Borton and E. Knight ; humorous recitation “ How He Helped Himself,” Aliss Mary Preston ; Shakespearean character sketch,

“ Prince Arthur,” Al iss Joy Ward ; musical monologue “ The Chimney Seat.” Aliss Noeleen Wormington : violin solo “ Souvenir ” (Drdla) Aliss Mildred Coburn; character sketch “ Pandora ” (Longfellow), Aliss Bella eale ; solo (Selected) Aliss Borton. Refore the final item and the singing of the National Anthem, Air Evans, the secretary of the fund, returned thanks for the support extended ant! congratulated the district on attaining the object in hand. He said there would be n surplus which would he handed on 1o Westland Hospital appeal. Special thanks were extended to Aliss James and her assistants, llie tievoted work of Aliss Giese as aecompaniste being stressed specially. An announcement was made also in respect to the Hospital appeal, in regard to which the band was giving a sacred concert in the theatre on Sunday night, and a euchre tournament would ho held on Tuesday night, in the Soldiers’ Hall, when the prizes would include free trips to the ghfeier by .Messrs Newman and .Messrs 'I ooliey.
