SHIPPING STRIKE

PLENTY OF LABOUR. SYDNEY, Dec. 9
No difliulty was experienced in securing labour to work the Union Company's steamer Kiwitea, the cargo of which was declared black during the strike, because it was loaded by employees of the Zinc Company at llisdo’i. The cargo was discharged yesterday and the vessel will sail on Monday. The Kakariki held up at -Melbourne [ for similar reasons was also worked EAOUR COUNCIL .MEETING. SYDNEY. Dec. 9. At a meeting of the Labour Council. tlio members complained that the leaders of the wharf labourers declared the recent strike without consulting the officials of associated unions, the majority of whose members were idled through the stoppage. The Council resolved to ask the Australian Council of Trade l liions to convene a conference of the transport unions with a view to obviating independent strikes. t The Council also decided to ask the members of all affiliated unions not to work overtime in order that some of the unemployed might lie absorbed. STRIKE COST ENORMOUS. MELBOURNE, Dec. 9. The latest estimate of the strike cost to shipowners is least three hundred thousand sterling, of which inter-Statc owners share is one hundred thousand sterling. The loss to the country as a whole is incalculable.
