WORKING OF COAL AIINL7. GREYAIOUTH, Dec. 9. Mr Kimbell (Under Secretary of Alines) and State mine officials yesterday met members of the Algiers’ Union Executive regarding a dispute as to removing pillars from Anderson section of Liverpool mine, which miners refuse to remove owing to alleged danger, eleven men having ceased work. The Miners’ Executive are. emphatic against the removal of the pillars and the matter was referred to the Buller section of Aliners’ Council for their opinion.
After a lengthy discussion Air Kimbell arranged for the men who refused work to be employed at other work at the mine, on the understanding that such would continue until the next cavil, which will take place about January 27th, when tbe pillar places must be included on the cavil. This was accepted by the exeeutivi members oi the unions present. P. AND T. DEPARTAIENT. AVELLINGTON, Dec. 8. The revenue returns of the Post and Telegraph Department for the quarter ended 30th September last, published in the Gazette to-night, shows the postal revenue (shillings and pence omitted) for the quarter amounted to £319,983, a decrease compared with the corresponding quarter last year, when it was £370.169. The telegraph revenue for the same period was £419.786, compared with £408,559 last year. Money orders were issued for £1,288,155, compared with £1,291,849 last year. Savings Bank deposits were £6,635.762, compared with £7,533,915 last year.
NO CHRISTAIAS day pictures. AVELLINGTON, Dec. 8. Tbe City Council, at a s|>eoial meeting to-day, unanimously decided not to allow pictures to be shown on Sunday, Christmas Day. STRANGE SUDDEN DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. After answering her front door bell at 9.20 last evening. Airs Malison, of Peterborough Street, near tbe heart of the city, found the body of a mail lying with the feet towards tbe door and the bead on the lawn. He was later identified as John Dunnett, farmer. of Tirnaru, a returned soldier, who was on a visit to Tinian-.. GASAVORKS MISHAP. AVELLINGTON, Dec. 8. Thomas Shnnmtkr.u, a single man, aged 40. of 47 Coutts Street. Klihirnie. received severe burns on the lace and body to-day while working at the Gasworks at Aliramar. He was admitted to hospital. His condition is not serious. THE COAIET. AA’E L LING TON, Dec. 8. Air G. AY Hudson, of Karon, gave to a Dominion reporter to-night tile following details concerning the comet: Its right ascension, be said, was 16 hours 51 minutes; its declination 45 deg. 40min. south. It was about equal in brilliancy to a star of the first magnitude. It sets, from Karori, about 9.30 from south south-west, and it can be seen south south-east about 4 a.m. Dr C. E. Adams, Government Astronomer, observed the comet to-night from the Dominion Observatory, and states definitely it is not the GriggSkjellrup Comet, which is not obsernlile to tbe naked eye. The tail is said to be li degrees long, the pioon being also 1$ degree^,
