He would he a bold man who would contend that the Government has emerged from the session with an enhanced reputation, or that the Prime Minister has in any way strengthened his position either in Parliament or in tin l country. What has been achieved? There have been heavy additions to the burden of taxation, both general and sectional, and. as far as wo are aware, not a single instance of any relief. Of course, the taxpayer has been promised relief next year, because, as the Reform journal in Auckland lias stated, ‘‘the interests of the taxpayer have ail wavs been regarded more tenderly in election year, and the future will not see any variation of that custom*’ “Lyttelton Times.”
