WESTLAND RACING CLUB
A meeting of the Committee of the above was held at the Cliibroom, Hamilton Street, last evening at !) o’clock. Present:—Messrs AY. E. Wilhiims i President). C. S. Xeville, M. Houston, H. McGregor, A. AY. Yarrall. J. J. Mclntosh. C. J. Sellers, J. Peake, I). J. Evans. The nominations for tln- Christmas j rate meeting were received and considered highly satisfactory, there being a substantial increase. The Racing Conference notified that I -Mr C. H. Gorton would he the Stipen- I diary Steward and Mr B. G. Black, the I Racecourse Inspector for the forthcoming meeting. Sir George Hunter. ALP., telegraph-) ed asking that members of the Club j be advised that Mr Seddon gave vain- j able assistance with the Gaming Bill | when before Parliament. Members ap- | predated what had been done and |
votes of thanks were accorded Sir George and Mr Seddon. Robert Adamson, Upper Bieearton, wrote thanking the Racing and Trotting Clubs lor the gift of an easy chair on tlie occasion of his marriage. B. E. Hatch, Palmerston North, advised acceptance of the position ol starter at the forthcoming meeting and wished the Club success. He appro-I dated also the proposal to race on j Easter Thursday instead of Easter | Wednesday, the change enabling Can-) terbury horses and owners being | brought to tho Coast after the C’.J.C. | meeting.
In connection with the foregoing the Secretary reported the District Committee had approved the change of date, and it was resolved to apply to tno President of the Racing Conference to hold the meeting accordingly. Messrs Lynch, Hokitika, wrote in respect to the conduct of the totalisator at the meeting, and the terms were accepted and agreed to.
The Bailways Department supplied j particulars of tram arrangements for race days, the time table serving all parts of the Westland section on both I flays. The trains would arrive from I (ireymouth at 10.20 and from Beefton I and Otira (and intermediate stations') at 11, and from Boss at 10.10. Trains would depart outward and at (1.10 (for Beefton and Otira) (5.15 for (ireymouth and 7 for Boss.
The Assistant Commission of Stamp Duties advised as to the amendment in taxation which gave some slight relief in general taxation to racing clubs.—Received with thanks. Messrs Williams. .Mclntosh and Evans were deputed to sign tho bond in respect to Amusement Tax. The Sports Protection l.eague advised as to action supporting relief to I clubs and indicated the amendments made by Parliament.—Received with thanks*.
Air A. Baker was elected a member of the club. The Secretary reported the general arrangements had been made for the coming race meetings. The Municipal Band would he in attendance. The entrance for pedestrians had been exchanged with that formerly for vehicles. This would afford less liability for accident. The course and appointments were in first class order, md everything was in excellent order or the meeting. Members praised the tenoral appearance of the course and iron ml*, unci referred to the eloso nt:cntiou and good work of the care.nicer. Altogether the prospects for he forthcoming meeting were regarded nost favourably. the promise being for i very successful gathering.
