The official return shows as a result of the adoption of increased height and chest measurement for trainees, due to commence'- training from the Ist. July 1926, over 39 per cent, of the youths medically examined for the citizens’ forces and over 25 per cent, of the loys examined for tbe senior cadets were found unfit. COLLIERY OWNERS’ ALARM SYDNEY, Doc. 8. Reviewing the enormous loss of wages and industrial dislocation, due to strikes, Mr McDonald (Chairman of the Northern Colliery Proprietors’ Assn.) said, never in tbe history of the State bad slackness in trade boon so intense. It was-assuming proportions that were causing anxiety and alarm to colliery proprietors. Australia’s trade in export coal was dwindling towards extinction. In twelve years. 1913 to 1925. intor-Stnte and foreign shipments fell by more than one million tons, and it was in the nature of a tragedy that while a great industry was fighting for existence, the pits should be idled on pretexts which wore unreasonable and often frivolous.
LOSS TN WAGES. SYDNEY. Dec. 8. Figures compiled by the Commonwealth Statistician show the total loss in wages in Australia through strikes from 1917 to 1926 inclusive amounted to £1 1.487.891 or an average of £1.448,789 yearly. N.S.Wi POLITICS. SYDNEY. Bee. 8. The Assembly passed a Bill prohibiting betting and wagering on licensed racecourses at night. The Assembly also passed a Bill authorising the Government to raise a loan of not more than £5.992.400 . sterling for public works.
