CHINESE TROUBLE
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association. CHINESE CREMES. SHANGHAI, Dec. 4. Police figures reveal an alarming crime position, which is becoming worse. The 'lnternational Settlement is becoming unsafe, and its reputation as a haven of refuge in disordered China, has been made to appear farcicial. Returns for November show that eight murders were committed, including that of an English woman who was hacked with axes, in daylight, in her own home. Four police, eight civilians and eight robbers were killed in street pistol battles between police and robbers. There were 137 armed robberies in thirty days, fourteen arrests for murder and 39 for robbery. An almost- daily sight is a policeman’s funeral, attended by units of British and Japanese military and naval forces, headed bv a hand from the Shanghai Defence Force. Many of those arrested have been identified as deserting Nationalist soldiers, equipped with the latest weapons and plenty of ammunition.
