(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. N.Z. NAVAL RESERVE. WELLINGTON, Dec. :j. The Alinisten, for Defence (the Hon. Air Rolelston) stated to-day that preliminary steps will he taken next week in connexion with the organisation of the New Zealand Royal Naval Reserve, Class D Divisions, in Christchurch and Dunedin, and that Captain J. R. Aliddleton, D. 5.0., R.N., Director of the New Zealand Royal Naval Reserves, is proceeding south on Alondny night for that purpose. Captain Aliddleton proposes to he in Christchurch on uiesday, and Dunedin on Thursday, and to return to Christchurch on Friday night, December 9th. leaving again for Wellington the tollowing night.

ADMISSION OF BARRISTER. WELLINGTON. Dec. 3. The Full Court dealt this morning with an application by Ernest Thomas Ilrosnahan, of Gisborne, for admission as a barrister on the ground of five years’ continuous practice as a solicitor. The application was brought before the Full Court because it appeared that Brosnaluin’s five years’ practice had been interrupted by fourteen days during which ho was not in actual business. Air AA’atson, for Ilrosnahan, submitted that the hiatus of fourteen days was not sufficient interruption to debar the applicant from admission and drew the Court’s attention to the case of ex parte Afoses. / Air Justice Al.acgregor: That seems a very old authority. The Chief Justice, in granting the application, said that the interruption was not sufficient to prevent the practice being" continuous, but the Court could not lay down any general rule as to what would amount to an invalidating interruption. Each case, said his Honour, must he decided on its own facts.

BLOCK IN NEW RAILWAY YARDS. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 0. Goods trains to all parts of Canterbury were delayed at the new marshalling yards at Aliddleton up to three hours this morning. The delay was due to the men not being used to the new system and were unable to cope with the congestion.

The new comet was plainly visible to the naked eye in the south-western sky from 9 o’clock last night until 12.45 this morning, when it disappeared behind the Western Hills. W hell first observed it had a long, curving tail, but later the curve vanished and the comet presented the appearance of a bright star with a long straight tail. It gained in brightness, and at midnight the head was of a golden, coppery colour.

WAIPUKURAU, Dee. 0. Sidney Gundersen, of Palmerston North, the second victim of the motoi collisi in on Pukeora-Sanatorium Hill on Sunday, died at Waipukurau Hospital early this morning. The Cuonial inquiry opened to-day and after identification of the body of Neil Anderson, by Samuel Copp, shearing contractor, of Wanganui, the employer of noth, and that of Gundersell, by the father, Hans Gundersen, farmer, of Norsewood was adjourned sine die. A SERIOUS FIRE. Cambridge, Dec. c. A block of nine wooden shop premises, in Duke Street, was demolished by fire at midnight last night. Five other buildings were saved by the magnificent efforts of the Brigade, assisted by a splendid new water supply, with a good pressure. The fire started in the store room at the rear of the Farmers’ Trading Coy’s, and quickly spread to a big block near by. Ibe Brigade checked the spread, saving several wooden buildings in the same block. Fortunately there was no wind or the lire might have crossed the street to handsome now buildings immediately opposite, which narrowly escaped. Nine or ten large plate glass windows were cracked.
