A FARMER’S VIEWPOINT.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In Rev. Hayward’s reply to you regarding your leader of Nov. 2Gth dealing with the Bible-in-Schools Bill, lie instances the Summer-time Bill to prove his statement of there being more light. It’s rather a pity there was not " more ” light, then the rev. gentlemen would know that the result of that farcical bill was not imaginary but reality—a real farce. Rev. Hayward fives in town and forgets about the country people. Take dairy farmers for instance, where wives and ehil-. dren (all those able to milk cows) up every morning during the dairy seiw son at 5.30 a.m. (Sidey’s time 4.30 a.m.) in many cases an infant in a push-cliair (.taken from its warm cot at this hour) lias to be brought to the shed also.
When these people wish to go to town for a day or attend church oil Sundays, it always means getting up at 4.30 a.m., an hour earlier. (Sidey’s time 3.30 a.m.) Probably to Rev. Hayward time means very little, but 1 feel quite sure if lie spent the three months summer-time on a dairy farm (for observation purposes only), being a Christian gentleman, lie would have sufficient charity in him to know the results were not imaginary as he now A thinks. AYlien the farming portion of | Mr Sidev’s constituency go to the poll at the next general election, they should know exactly what to do. Now, coining back to the paper’s article on the Bible-in-Schools, I must congratulate the paper on the broadminded way the subject was handled. You can see now and sympathize with all those for whom the Bill is going to prove harmful. Why should our poor, over-taxed, nerve-racked school teachers (who do not live by preaching the gospel) have more responsibility thrust upon them, thereby lightening the burden on others. Yes, Mr Editor, the home IS the place to start with the young minds. Space would not be permitted me to "~~ deal with the harmful and disastrous results if such a Bill should become law. Our peaceful system of secular education would be thrown into dire chaos. I am. etc., A FARMER’S WIFF„ Koiterapgi, sth, December,
