A railway guard named .John Crawford. aged 08, residing at 14 Alma Street, .St. Hilda-. was admitted to the hospital at (i,F> this evening suffering from injuries received from falling olf a train. EARAIER KILLED. OAAfARF, Dec. 2. The body of Robert- Rodgers, -I!), farmer, of Five Folks Inear Oamaru). was found in a paddock this evening. Deceased had been driving a tractor, which was capsized. Only meagre detail., are. available, hut it. is presumed that the tractor fell on Rodgers in overturning. ST It IKK EFFECTS. SYDXICY. Dec. 3. As the strike is developing, its effects are becoming more widespread. Many thousand men are idled throughout the Commonwealth, involving a colossal loss to industry.
All inter-State commerce has ceased and loss ot wages alone is estimated at £20.01)0 daily. The waterfront at Sydney presents a desolate appearance for apart from a few .shifts, the wharves arc deserted. It is expected to-day that ten thousand miners in the Northern Coalfields a ill he thrown out of employment as a result of the hold up ot inter-State and overseas shipping. MELBOCEXE. Dec. 3.
Senator McLachlan, alter separate conferences with representatives of the Oversea Shipping Association, Commonwealth Shipowners’ Association and the Secretary of Mcll>otmie Trades Hall Council, said he was more hopeful of an early settlement than he had been, prior to the conferences. Tt is understood further lonforenees are being held to-day. Efforts were made by officials of the Australian and Xcw Zealand Council of Trades T'nions and Secretary of Victorian 1 radcs Flail Council to open negotiations lor a settlement of the dispute. Alter these officials had conferred with the Federal Management Committee of the Watersiders Federation, it was announced that further representations will he made, with a view to obtaining intervention and arbitration. Tu the event 'of this course failing to bring about the re(|uired result, a conference of all watersiders organisations in the Commonwealth will immediately he convened to frame a common strike policy.
