OIL GUSH LI? JX II? AQ. LONDON, Oct. 18. ZTev.-s of a sensational oil find in Iraq (.Mesopotamia) readied London last night. A ]tenter message from Bagdad states: file I iirki.sh Petroleum Company has struck oil at one of its drill mg installations near Kirkuk. "At three o’clock in the morning without warning, oil began to flow, a few minutes later shooting into the air at, it is stated, a rate of S,(VJi) tons every 24 hours. ‘‘lbis oil is now being burned puiding arrangements for closing the well until commercial production is required.” An official of the company in London told a. reporter: Tiie actual “flnsfi” flow of the new gusher was greater than was first reported, being in the neighbourhood of 50,(100 barrels (say 7.000 tons) a day. It is impossible, however, to prophesy yet what the settled production will turn out to be. “This is the first well brought in within the company’s territory, .and it is extremely satisfactory that oil has been struck at a depth of 1,521 feet. Actually we were prepared to drill if necessary to a depth of from 4.500 feet to 5.000 feet. “Certainly the gusli is a very great one, hut it does not compare with some wells in Mexico which, I heliexe, actually ‘‘flushed’’ with a production of 15C.000 barrels a dev.”

ARSON' A N'T) THEFT. CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 1. Concerning the case of Herbert William Carev, who appeared in the Supreme Court before Justice Adams for sentence on a c-haCge of arson. His Honour said that as a result of iirrjuiries which had been made, lie was sure that Carey was insane at the time of his offence, and that his plea should be altered from guilty to not guilty. If in the meantime Carey is not dealt with by the Minister of Justice, he will appear at the Sessions.
