The Auckland City Council announces that the Bank of New Zealand’s London office has underwritten a loan of £450,000 at 5* per cent., repayable in 1959-61. The loan will be issued at par in London about December Bth. HON. A MERY TO VISIT MT. COOK. DUNEDIN, Dec. 1. Mr L. S. Amery, Secretary of State for the Dominions, arrived in Dunedin to-day, ami was accorded a civic reception. He will spend to-morrow in Dunedin and will then proceed to Alt. Cook Hermitage, where he will spend several days. THEFT CHARGE. AUCKLAND, Dec. 1. Defalcations amounting to .£I,OOO were alleged in the Police Court to-day, when an employee in the Customs Department in Auckland was charged with stealing £lO 12s Bd, the property of the Department.
The Magistrate (Air McKean) remanded accused as requested, and an application for suppression of accused’s name was granted. Bail was fixed at £3OO. SEQUEL TO LIVE WIRE TRAGEDY. NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 1. John Wilson, a farmer, of Ratapiko, was electrocuted some time ago by ,a live wire falling on a fence on his property, with which he came in contact. A claim was brought against the Taranaki Power Board for damages, claimant alleging negligence in construction and control of the lines. A settlement was confirmed in the Supreme Court to-day, by which the Board agrees to pay £l-190 damages and £IOO costs.
SUMMER. TIME. HAWERA, Dec. 2.
South Taranaki Farmers’ Union Executive, which resolved in October to ignore summer time by meeting at twelve instead of eleven o’clock, met for the first time under the new timetable yesterday, and decided to rescind the resolution and meet at eleven o’clock in future. The sponsor of the motion said lie could not agree to Mr Sidev’s theory, but it would he loss inconvenient to reach the meeting an hour earlier than substitute afternoon ten for luncheon. The President (H. Hodge) voiced the opinion that though willing to agree with the majority, personally he declared lie absolutely ignored Air Sidoy’s time and refused to alter any clock, even for the Queen of England. As far as Tam concerned the meetings will start at 10 o’clock.
A WOMAN’S DEATH. NAPIER, Dec. 2
At an inquest on Catherine Gertrude Mackintosh, a recently married woman, a verdict of heart failure whilst under an anaesthetic, conditions ’ heing worsened by the prior loss of blood due to haemorrhage. An operation was considered essential to complete the abortion commenced by the deceased.
A FATAL ACCIDENT. TE AWAMUTU, Dec. 2. A fatal accident occurred about ten o’clock last night on the Teralm road, two miles from Te Awamutu. EricStorey, aged 23, son of A. H. Storey, a district farmer, and Nelson Jackson, about the same age, a farm hand employed by F. Foeke, both riding motorcycles, met in a head-on collision. When found about half an hour later both wore unconscious, lying on the road some yards apart. Storey was under his machine, which was smouldering. Help was quickly sent for and as both were terribly injured they were removed to tbe Waikato Hospital. Jackson died practically on arrival. Storey is still unconscious.

At the Magistrate's Court, Leslie Altvyn Olson McKenzie, was charged with breaking prison at Timnru on November 27th. and with the theft of two blankets, one overcoat and other articles of the total value of £5. On the charge of breaking gaol, he was sentenced to three years’ Borstal, con-
current with the previous sentence, and on thn charges of theft he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on. This means an additional sentence of one year.
