EARTHQUAKE INCIDENT. The recent earthquake wsa responsible for an amusing incident. Three men were smoking, when the shock came. One dropped his cigarette with—well—surprise; one found himself chewing the end of his; while the third went on complacently puffing away as though nothing untoward had happened. “ You fellows are suffering from nerves,” the latter remarked. “Most men do nowadays,” said one of the others. “Too much smoking! ” “Xo fear! LABOUR AND BOOKS. Whether the great mass of the workers care much for good literature has often been discussed. “In the neighbourhood of Oldham,” wrote Mrs Gaskell, “there are weavers who throw the shuttle with unceasing speed though Newton’s ‘ Prineipa ’ lies open at the loom, to he snatched at in workhours, hut revelled over in meal-times or at night,” and in most trades there have, doubtless, always been a small minority of bookish workmen. The impression, however, now is that it is precisely the workers of this type who have become most deeply involved in modern organised labour movements, and so have developed an indifference, if not. indeed an antagonism, to serious reading, as likely to attract attention and side-track the political working class movement.—A.L.. in the “ Birmingham Post.”
