As the result of protests made by importers of petrol, the Government agreed that the new lax on petrol of •hi per gallon should not he immediately operative, hut should apply only to cargoes leaving the country of export after Nov. S. It is evident that this concession will prove a costly one to the Treasury. The Christmas period is always one of exceptional trade for suppliers of petrol, and it is therefore a normal condition for them to stock up heavily early in December. In the present instance three cargo vessels, the West Calera, the Crosskeys, and the City of Lyons, had left American ports just prior to November 8 and will each bring heavy cargoes of petrol in cases and drums. It is also understood that two oil tankers are on the way with petrol that will escape the duty.
