AMPUTATED HIS OWN LEG. GISBORNE, Nov. 24. Johnny Wekn, of ATo re re, having suffered for years from an affection of one leg, amputated it below the knee with a razor. He buried the severed portion, and some time later loosened the ligature of twine which he had bound tightly around the leg before -the -amputation. The result was that lie almost bled to death before he was found. He was at once removed to the Wairoa, Hospital, and it is understood that lie is making good progress towards recovery.

A GIRL FINED
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 29
Gladys Victoria Carpenter was fined £2 to-day for assaulting John Sneddon. The police said that the girl admitted she had been out to get revenge. The pair had been keeping company, but evidently had parted. While at a dance the girl rushed at Sneddon with a table knife. Had she not been stopped there was no doubt she would have injured him. Counsel for the girl said she had been treated very badly.
BURGLAR CAUGHT. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 29,
Jas Hamilton, aged 39. a taxi driver was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court on five charges of breaking 'and entering Mitchell’s boot store and stealing goods to the value of £3l 15s. A watch was kept by the manager and detectives, and they seized the accused after he had entered thp warehouse by inserting a key in the floor.
ESCAPEE RECAPTURED. TIMAR.IT, Nov. 29.
Leslie Alwyn Olson McKenzie, aged seventeen, who escaped from prison while awaiting transfer to Borstal, was recaptured at Wnshdyke this morning. Later he appeared at Court charged with breaking gaol and was remanded till Friday.
INQUEST VERDICT. WANGANUI, Nov. 29. At the inquest concerning the death of Air W. E. AfeCarthy, draper, held to-day, the Coroner returned a verdict that deceased met bis death by asphyxiation when mentally unsound.
CORONER’S INQUEST. PALAIERSTON N., Nov. 29.
A Colonial Inquiry was held this morning, into tho circumstances of tho death of Jock Fleming, aged 17, as a result of injuries sustained in a collision between a motor cycle lie was riding and a motor car at a street inteiseetion. Evidence as given that deceased sustained severe internal 'injuries. His case was hopeless. The opinion was also expressed that if deceased had continued straight instead of swerving, he would have missed the car.
The Coroner returned a. verdict that deceased met his death from shock and haemorrhage, the result of severe internal injuries. The Coroner commented that it had been a ease of misadventure. Both motorists appeared to have been approaching the intersecTtiJn at mole than a safe speed, but an error of judgment apparently had been made by Fleming, turning, to the left instead of keeping straight on.
OILFIELDS REPORT. GISBORNE, Nov. 29. Taranaki oilfields report that Waiapu No. 2 well was drilled to a depth of 2(150 feet in grey shale, with 8J inch casing to 2(519 feet. Gisborne No. 1 well, testing water was shut off to-day No. 2 well road construction and preparation of site in hand.
