A.1.C., who has been appointed to the position of Dairy Research Chemist at Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, wa.s horn in Southland. He came to England in October. 1924. and for three years has been carrying out in the chemistry laboratories at University College, Louden a research on ‘‘The Lssential Oil of the 'Xgaio' Tree.” The oil Improved to he of a new type which arouses considerable academic interest. but it is not likely that it will he of any commercial importance. In '.Tune last Dr McDowall successfully submitted a thesis embodying the results of hi- researches for the Degree of Doct r of Science of the University of London. He received also about the same time an appointment ns assistant-lecturer in organic chemistry at University College. Then he left England on a holiday trip to New Zealand and spent five weeks in the Dominion, mostly in Invercargill and Dunedin. Tie returned to England by the Tamnroa and reached London at tho beginning of October
