VETERAN’S DEATH. GORE, Nov. 24. Obituary.—Samuel Ellis, aged 98 years. He saw service with the naval forces in the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny and other historic fields. He was discharged after 30 years and came to New Zealand 40 years ago. He was latterly working a.s a rabbiter at Ferndale, near Gore. INQUEST VERDICT. GISBORNE. Nov. 24. At the adjourned inquest on Mrs Alary Jane Cameron, who expired .suddenly in the garden ol a friend's house on the night ol October 31st. the analyst’s report oil the contents ol the stomach showing negative results, the Coroner returned a verdict of natural causes in accordance with the medical testimony. INQUEST VERDICT. GISBORNE. Nov. 24. At the inquest on Thomas Hanna, 25, drowned in the Waiternata River, evidence was given that deceased was subject to epileptic seizures. The Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to drowning, deceased taking an epileptic fit whilst swimming. .MOTORIST FINED. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 24. Doctor Bates, who was fined £2 and costs to-day for driving over a railway crossing when the line was not clear, pleaded that a bird’s nest had lice:, built in the signal hell, which could not lie heard. He was playing hide and seek with death, the .Magistrate said. It was a motorist’s duty to get out and look. DIED FROM INJURIES. ROTORUA, Nov. 24.
Maud Thomson, aged 39, the victim of the scalding accident in the Kurau Reserve on November 13th. died at King George Hospital. The woman, prior Lo her death, was married in the hospital to J. Nobel, to whom she was i'li gaged.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church concluded its sitting yesterday and on Lelialf of the ■standing (ommittee appointed to draw up a brief statement of the laith Professor Dickie sail that the committee had done nothing hut was waiting to see what the churches in the Old Land were doing. At hen. these churches issued a modern statement of Presbyterian beliefs, the committee would act.
|)r Gibb reported that to public questions the committee had considered an amendment to motion, proposing that the Assembly should approve of the peace manifesto and had agreed to recoin mend that the Assembly should accord the general approval of the manifesto and send it down to the Presbyteries for consideration and report, this was adopted. The next Assembly meets in St. David’s Church, Auckland, on Wednesday, November 21, 1928. ‘ HON. A.M FRY’S TOUR. TE KUITI, Nov. 24. Hon. Amerv and party spent the night at llangatiki and arrived at TV Kniti at 8.10 this morning and received a Maori welcome at the station. The -Mayor (Mr AY. J. llroadfoot) accorded the visitors a civic welcome from the steps ol the Blanket room, over I 100 people being present, besides school children. The party lelt by motor ear for New Plymouth in beautiful weather. MODE OF CHANCE. CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 24. Hugh John AleLeod was convicted and ordered to pay costs to-day, on a charge of commencing a scheme wherein* prizes were disposed of by mode ot chance. The second charge of selling liquor without a license was dismissed. The .Magistrate said this was certainly not sly grog selling. Defendant rail a scheme to help a school improvement fund and the prizes included bottles of whisky and bottles of beer.
