With Christmas little more than a month away, interest is being centred in the Midsummer Meeting of the Westland Ttacing Club, which will take place on the Hokitika racecourse on Boxing Day and the day following. It is often said that Hokitika has all the airs and graces ol a large city. It certainly has many of the appurtenances of a city in its l'uhlic Offices, Banks, library. Town Hall, etc., hut there is no institution in its midst it is more proud of than its Hospital, .and it is acknowledged l,y all our visitors. Its pride is fully warranted. A line opportunity to display our personal enthusiasm is given in the meeting being held on November 28th to inaugurate Hospital Day. Make it a point of being there.

Mr B. C. Wold, and Mr J. A. C. Bayne, Chief Inspector of Coal Minos, accompanied by Miss Hunter, ol luangaliua Junction, were proceeding along the Boiler Road near Croiuuluu in a motor car on Monday, "lien the\ encountered some loose shingle on the road, and the ear became unmanageable and ran into a deep ditch on the side of Hie road, throwing the occupants out. Mr Colin Crooks filled the role of best man. Rev. Father ilolohan performed the ceremony, after which the guests were entertained at the wedding breakfast, at the residence of the bride’s parents.

At Christchurch last week a great deal of interest was evinced in the first appearance of the New Zealand cricket team, when a friendly match was p! ed between the tourists and the Christ’s College first eleven. The outstanding performance of the day was that of R. J. S. Dean (son of Canon Bean), the College stock bowler, who in thirteen overs, three of which were maidens, took six wickets for 50 runs. A fast-medium trundler. Bean keeps a steady length, and his knack of turning the hall makes him a dangerous bowler. He was at his best in the match, and always commanded respect. His performance. says the “Lyttelton ’limes,” against such first-class batsmen, was, for a school-boy, a remarkable one.
