BRITISH TROOPS AT HANKOW. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.t | SHANGHAI, Nov. 20. Despite the statement that Bntisn | troops which proceeded to Hankow bv the cruiser “Vindictive” were lor the purpose of relieving the marines, it 1 now transpires they were sent at the ( urgent request of the British Consul- , ate authorities at Hankow, for theprotection of lives and property on account of the threatening condition of affairs. The troops will not he landed unless it is absolutelv necessary. It is not intended at present to take over the settlement bv force. This is the first time in history that British troops have Proceeded beyond Nanking. Authorities state they are held in readiness for I auv emergency and drastic measuie if found necessary.
