The fear expressed by Mr Buddo that the petrol tax xvill drive nearly every lorry off the roads is largely discounted by the fact that it will only bring the price of petrol up to what it was eighteen months ago. And even if lorries should be driven off the roads that is better than that farmers should he driven off the land through excessive rating imposed by the cost of road maintenance. Moreover, the lorry traffic would revert to the railways, while the roads would have a better chance of showing something more lasting for the money expended on them.-—Dunedin “ Star.”
