LEVEL CROSSING SMASH. DUNEDIN, Nov. 9. A sensation.il accident, fortunately not attended by fatal consequences, occurred at the Stirling railway crossing this evening, when the express from the south collided with a oneton lorry loaded with merchandise, and other articles. The motor vehicle was Rally damaged, hut the driver, who saw the train, hut whose brakes failed to act, managed to jump dear in the nick of time. Included in the lorry’s freight was a blacksmith's .anvil, and had this fallen on the line, the express might easily have been derailed. A CORRECTION. WELLINGTON. Nov. 10. John Howard William Tapp was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in the Supreme Cuort at Timaru on November 4th for obtaining goods by false pretences. By a regrettable mistake the surname was turned into Tripp in the Association telegram of that day, and this correction is therefore published to set it right. ROYAL SHOW. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 10. Fine weather favoured the second day of the Royal Show and the crowd was larger than yesterday. The Gover-nor-General was unable to attend owing to illness and Her Excellency performed the opening ceremony at noon. Judging is proceeding. CONSTABLE SHOT. Wanganui, Nov. 10. Between eight and nine o’clock this morning the report of a firearm was heard at the rear of the police station, and later the prostrate form of vimstable Sims was found in the yard with a service revolver bullet wound near the heart. He was hospitalled in a critical condition.

That the elimination of the third issue can only have the effect of disfranchising a largo number of electors but that tbo provision of 55 per cent, majority and extension of tenure to six years are very wise proposals, is the opinion expressed upon the Licensing Amendment Bill by Archdeacon Williams (President of the New Zealand Licensing Reform Association). The Archdeacon commended the notion of the Prime Minister in personally accepting the responsibility for drafting iho Bill, adding that it was infinitely superior to last year’s measure. THEFT OF COWS. NAPIER, Nov. 10. Alfred Edward Wnkeley was sentenced to twelve months’ reformative detention by Judge McGregor for theft of five cows.
