CHINESE TROUBLE.
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association,
NATIONALISTS’ CLAIM. SHANGHAI, Nov. 8.
Tbe Nationalists claim a major victory in Luiho, Honan. Following five days’ fighting, Fengyuhsiang reports the capture of four armoured trams with twenty thousand prisoners, fortyfive cannon, one hundred trench mortars and a similar number of machine guns. He also states that he reached within three miles of the outside of Hsuchowfu, an important strategic railway centre, and avers he will sweep Shantung clear of the Northerners within a fortnight. The report is of a purely Nationalist origin, but in the absence ot Northern denials it is probably true. CHINESE REPORT. SHANGHAI, Nov. 9. Confirming Fengyuhsiang’s spectacular victory at Liuho, northern dispatches report tho Shantung Governor, Changcluincang, throwing in thirty thousand reinforcements, stemmed the tide of defeat, renewing the morale of the Northerners. Local Chinese explanations of the situation are that success was owing to the fact that the Christian General eventually fought instead of betraying his colleagues. I hey regard the northern position as still ot the gravest.
