The monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society takeplace a.t 7.30 O’clock this evening at tho County Chambers.

The programme of the Westland Racing Club for the summer meeting to he held on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 20th. and 27th. appears in this issue.

River erosion has caused some damage to the eastern 'approach of the Knnicri river bridge, Ivokatahi road. A portion of the approach has subsided and teni.poiktry protection was provided with stone work. With tho falling of the flood waters it will he possible to put in more secure protection probably in tho nature of wing lining from the bridge structure.

Mr A. TV. Creighton, of the Blenheim postal staff, who broke his arm bile playing for the Marlborough Rugby reps at Nelson during the last season, had the misfortune, while playing tennis at Seddon a few days ago to break tho same arm in the same place. Mr Creighton, who was acting as postmaster at Seddon at the time, has been relieved by Mr V. Logan of the Blenheim office.

Samuel Chapman, an inmate of the Old People’s Home, Westport passed away on Tuesday morning. The deceased was a native of England, 84 years of age, and had, resided in New Zcland for 63 years. His wife predeceased him by many years. Deceased in tho early days followed mining and later had the hotel at Inangahua Junction. Three sons survive deceased, Samuel, John and William, and three daughters, Airs Alangos, Westport; Airs Smith, Buller Road and Afrs AlcGrath, Greyinouth.

A deputation representing the North Island and the South Island Motor Unions is to wait on the Prime Minister to-day (Thursday) to make representations on behalf of motorists as to the basis of the petrol tax. Messrs H. C\ Harley and F. W. Johnston were appointed at last week’s meeting of the South Island Motor Union to represent that body in any representations made to the Government relating to the petrol tax. The anniversary ball in the Woodstock Hall last evening drew a capital attendance and the function proved a marked success. The floor was in capital order and was in charge of Mr A. Xancckiveil, while the Black Hand Orchestra supplied good music that kept dancers tripping merrily. The supper arrangements were a special feature and reflected every credit on the ladies committee. To-night a juvenile ball will he held commencing at eight o’clock and all arrangements are complete for a very successful gathering. A good night’s fun is assured and juveniles specially are being particularly catered for.

An extraordinary general meeting of the Hokitika Gas Coy., Ltd., was held at the Company's Office, Stafford Street, yesterday afternoon at 5

o’clock. Mr D. J. Evans. Chairman of Directors, presided. Iji was explained that the meeting had been called conformable with legal advice to enable the Company to make extended powers under the articles ot association to deal with various matters which had not been contemplated when the Company Was formed over fifty years ago. Conditions and times had changed greatly, and the altered position called for the amendment. The formal motions of which notice had been given to tho shareholders, wore moved by the Chairman and

seconded hv Air AV. K. Williams and carried. The confirmatory meeting was fixed for December 7 at the same place and hour. Before tho meeting dispersed it was indicated that the half yearly returns which were now being compiled disclosed tho alßjits of the Company in a very satisfactory and promising position. I lie erection of the new gas holder was expected to he in hand in the new year, and when available would add considerably to the carrying powers of the Company.
