A series of private conferences of Aiiglo-Dominioii representatives discussed at length the vital necessity for research to improve the finer quality wools and meet the keener competition in future. British research experts considered the development of artificial silk is unlikely to affect the finer wools, but it is anticipated it could seriously compete with coarser, therefore it was proposed to co-ordinate research Empire wide. Dominion members !l re concentrating on the problems of production, and British on uses as a result of conferences. A definite scheme is now being formulated for submission to Australian, New Zealand and South African Government, suggesting joint
research. Julius, interviewed, emphasised the need for finer Australian merinos. He said Yorkshire manufacturers assured me they are now unable to obtain fnioi wools from Australia and are compelled to purchase from South Africa. Iwo Yorkshire men, pointing to large stocks from South African previously bought exclusively from Australia, told me that Australia had tetter concentrate on the production of the finest merino. Artificial silk is going to hit your coarse wools hard. This means careful re search and more exact knowledge ol conditions of breeding and nutrition. The British Woollen Worsted Association is prepared to develop research there and give the Dominions the fullest information regarding the behaviour of different classes of wool for spinning and ijreaving, if they undertake then sharegrowing specially merinos, which is best investigated in Australia.
