Early yesterday morning Mr Gardiner. a resident of lower Hutt, discovered the body of a man amongst some scrub in a paddock in Taita Gorge, with the throat cut from oar to car. While playing on the sand hills m the vicinity of Manawatu Heads yesterday, John Shortt, the eleven-year-old son of a beach resident with other boys found an unoxphided shell which had apparently been fired by an artillery unit when in camp at Eoxton during live-shell practice. Not knowing the danger of tampering with the shell. Shortt apparently was hitting it. when an explosion occurred. His arms, face eves and one leg were all badly injured. The lad was removed to Palmerston North hospital and his condition is very serious.
