Small bov.s were in evidence on Saturday afternoon and evening in connection with the annual observances of Guy Fawkes Day.
A pleasant afternoon was cn.oyed on the bowling green on Saturday atternoou. Afternoon tea was kindly supplied by Ale.si!nines Conning and .1. H. Wilson.
The death took place at Christchurch uh Friday of Mr Henry M. Matson, the eldest son of Hie founder of H. Matson’s and Oo.s business in Christchurch. Deceased was 88 years of age.
The Hokitika Borough will shortly lie putting tbe revised motoring bylaw in force. Tho by-law was drafted some months ago, and now awaits final confirmation. It " ill be considered by tho Council at an early meeting.

Pavlight saving came into force yesterday morning, and apparently caused no inconvenience, there being the usual attendances at the churches, Today the usual business activities passed off os usual, it being remarked that even more promptitude than usual was observed. The days however wore both wet and prevented much advantage being taken of the extra hour of daylight.
'The news that hydro-electric power will be available for public use in North Westland early in the new year is causing quite a flutter of interest. Ibo local staff of the Westland Power Ltd. has been added to of late, and everything is being prepared to start operations immediately. Mr *T. S. Langford, the Managing Engineer, loft for the north on Saturday to arrange for the purchase ol a substantial part of the plant for the initial operations. Active mining operations are likely to ho resumed in the Fox’s district as soon as the electric power is in sight. From prospecting operations which have taken place there, good gold returns are said to he assured.
'The Management Committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council decided at its meeting on Friday night to appoint C. N. Kingston captain of the Rest team for the first test against the New Zealand cricket team, to he played on November lltli. 13th. 14th. and loth, at Wellington. Kingston is wellknown on both the cricket and football fields, and has represented New Zealand in Rugby. A wicket-keeper of the first rank, he is also a very fine batsman, and he was considered unlucky to have missed the tour Homo last year, lie captained the Taranaki representative eleven—holders of the Hawke Cup—last year, and that expericnee should fit him for the position of captain of the Rest team.

ATTss Jane Bradley was bridesmaid and Mr Samuel AlcArthur. the prominent Labour leader and Scottish Junior International player was best man.
