At the Supreme Court to-day. a young man. John Howard William Tapp, was found guilty of two charges of obtaining goods hv false pretences. On a third charge ot obtaining credit by fraud he was found, not guilty. Sentence was deferred.

Leonard Brooks, lamp trimmer on the s.s. Ruapehu, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing # one ease ol gin. the property of the N.Z. Shipping Coy., valued at £5. Tie admitted assisting to Oi'> gin away. ' ! - • 4th officer found in a hatch where Brooks was that a ease of gin had ri rope attached to it. Accused said another member of the crew told him he would find something on the end of the rope. Had the discovery not been made, local watersiders would have been connected with the removal of the gm. A fine of £5 was imposed, or in default a month’s imprisonment.

A ten-roomed house in Matawhem owned by Frank Joodbury and insured for £1.210 was destroyed by fire. The family escaped in their night clothes, saving nothing.

Samuel P. Briggs, a law clerk, employed by W. J. Cracroffc Wilson, a solicitor, was charged before Magistrate Mosley with stealing £337, tho property cf tho Simmons Estato and others. ' He pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
