The death of Mr John O’Brien occurred at the Grey Hospital yesterday, after an illness of alxiut three months. The Princess Theatre is likely to hold a capacity house this evening when the St. Paul’s Dramatic Club will make its initial appearance. Some thirty performers will take part in three playlets, and the variety of the programme should ensure a very pleasant entertainment. There will he a very pleasing stage presentation in the three distinctive productions, while a locally organised orchestra will supply a varied programme of incidental music.

Tlio funeral of the late Mr C'. J Nightingale took place this morning. There was a very large assemblage of mourners, the country districts being well represented, and also the several local bodies with which deceased was connected. Four members of the “Guardian” staff acted as pall-hearers. There wore many floral tributes received from sorrowing friends making a decided testimony to the esteem in which deceased was held in the community. The Bov. J. Perkins, assisted by Canon Hamilton conducted the services at All Saints’ Church and the graveside.

The funeral of the late Mrs A. Clifton, of Pimu, took place yesterday afternoon. Leaving liimu at 1.30 p.m. there was a large gathering present. As the cortege passed Woodstock School the .scholars lined the roadside in respectful attention. At All Saints Church there was an .impressive service h.v Rev J. Perkins, assisted by Canon Hamilton, who also officiated at the graveside. A large number of townspeople joined the cortege at the church, from whence it was an impressive one. Various local bodies, of which Mr Clifton was a former member were represented, including Westland County Council and the Hospital Board. A largo number of floral tributes were placed on the graveside from sorrowing friends.

Complaints were made at the meeting of the Grey Jjubilec Committee that many business people were refusing to sign the- guarantee of £.| to cover any possible loss on the celebrations. Creenslade) find that business people were the- ones who would profit most by visitors to the jubilee and be thought that they should support the committee to the extent of guaranteeing a paltry £4 each towards the expenses; especially as it was hoped that the celebrations would be self-support-ing and not even a portion of the guarantee would have to he called up ll<> was sorry to think that the business community w'is not individually willing to support the jubilee to Ibe extent, of signing the guarantee.
