WANAKA NOTES
(From a Correspondent) DUNEDIN, Oct. 28. Two Public Works officers were recent visitors to the Haast Pass track. An inspection was made ot the Burke huts and horse paddock. The result is a new and larger hut is to he erected, also a large secure horse paddock. Voting brown trout were successfully liberated in the Upper Haast \ alley from Pembroke hatcheries alter a three days’ journey. Messrs C. Hodgekinson anil Dennison entered the Haast Valley, recently engaged in deer culling on behalf of the Westland Acclimatisation Society.
Otago fat stock buyers also passed through on route to the Best Coast cattle stations. They wore, however, unsuccessful, as all, with the exception of one line, had just leit lor the \\ ultima Spring Sale.
The Inspector of Machinery inspected machinery at Mnkarora this week, including the launch “Mnkarora, which has passed the necessary requirements, and will enter the "W anaka-Maknrora Service, running in the near future. Mr E. Cameron, a former West (oast resident, is the enterprising proprietor. A concert and dance was held on Saturday and was well patronised. Ihc high state of the river prevented Mt. Albert and Rainy Flat settlers from crossing. The programme was various and some line talent came forth. The proceeds went towards the purchase ol a public piano, a much-needed instrument.
The fishing season at Lake Hawea and Cpper Wanttka opens on Nov. Ist. Numerous enquiries indicate a large How of anglers to Makarora this season. Several keen anglers have already made an appearance at Pembroke.
With Lite approaciitg tourist season Wauaka is benefited with a daily mole connection with Dunedin, clue to tieenterprise ol the Wauaka Motors Ltd.
Mr Fred Boole anil Mr and .Mrs Campbell are in the South on holidays.
Mr Erie dames is in Dunedin on tourist business and reports numerous enquiries and hookings lor the I'ranz .Josef and other points. Several tours have already hit'll organised. Mr Wilson » Manager Tourist Department), and Mr Steel (Secretary. Otago Expansion League. Dunedin), are attempting to organise a party of public men to make the tour of Haast Bass to W ail l o. Jackson Ray may lie included in the itinerary.
.Mr Erie Janies (Dunedin) heads a partv who will attempt an alpine trip to till' West Coast from Pembroke, via Matnkituki River. Mt. Aspiring and Arawatn River, returning via Haast Bass. Mr Fowler and family f“ Silver Acres,” Anderson’s Rav) make an exploration tour ol the Wilkie River as far as the dividing range. West Coast venison was packed over the Haast Bass, thence hy ear to Dimedin. in less than three days, arriving in goo< i condition. It Inter appeared on the menu of lending hotels ns Y\ esthmd venison nnd was the cause ol flattering comments.
Doer skins are being packed Irom th( Haast Valley consigned to an Amorieai market.
Messrs .!. Black, Sliaiul. and L. K. Wilson (Dunedin) are stalking at Makarora this season.
The proprietress ol the new up-to-date Wauaka Accommodation Hons-, arrived at Pembroke this week. r l h house, which has just hoon completed is situated on the shores ol Lake Wauaka and will he in readiness to ro reive guests in a few weeks. The Hawea Pint (Upper Clutlm* Jockey Club open their annual race* to-day.
