NATIVES TAKE TO BUSH
SYDNEY, Oct. 31
A message from Ntdagai to-day states that a punitive expedition advanced ten miles into the hills and established a base at Notaotao, throe thousand feet above sea level, in a deserted village. The disaffected natives have deserted villages and taken to the hush. The operations were delayed by the difficult condition of the country. N.S.W. CABINET PROPOSALS. SYDNEY, Nov. I. The State Government at a Cabinet meeting decided to make a number ot alterations in the Industrial Arbitration Act in the coming session. The powers of the Industrial Commissioner will be curtailed and parties before the Commission will be given the right to appeal to another tribunal. Chairmen of Conciliation Committee will he deprived of the right now allowed to giving a casting vote. Parties will have the right to appeal from the Conciliation Committee to the Industrial Commission.
TO BREED ALLIGATORS. SYDNEY, Nov. 1
The Auburn Council received application for permission to establish breeding pools for walruses, crocodiles, alligators and octopuses on land adjoining Duck River. The object of the application is to supply zoological gardens and aquariums in various parts of the would. The pools would tie'walled with steel so that it would Ik? impossible for the inmates to esrfipe. The Council referred the application to the inspector.
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN RETR ENCH A 1 ENTS.
(Received thi9 dav at 11.0 a.m.) ADELAIDE, Nov. 1. As the result of a policy of retrenchment in South Australian railways, it has decided that the services of two thousand employees tie dispensed with in the next six weeks. The Premier, Air Butler, says the first to go will be those who have reached the retiring age, but are still kept on.,Owing to the nature of the work, it is impossible to provide part time employment to do away with the dismissals. Mr Butler said it is not intended to apply retrenchment throughout the Government service, hut economy is being practiced in that no new nppointmenst will he made, and vacancies caused by retirements owing to men reaching the nge limit will not- he filled.
