In consequence of counter-attractions l-his week'the monthly meeting ol the Westland Acclimatisation Society lias been postponed for a week, and will be held on Thursday of next week.

The acting-president of the Canterbury Progress League, Mr G. M. Hull, had his left arm broken and his right shoulder blade cracked as the result of a lull from a pine tree on Saturday afternoon. He will be in the Lewisham Hospital for probably a week. Mr Hall was topping a belt of trees on one side of bis residence at 103, llacktliorne Road, Cashmere. when he lost his hold and fell to the ground.

New roads being constructed in the Koitorangi district by the local body out of Government grants will have tho effect of opening up more land for settlement. The improved means of access will enable some of the larger holdings to he cut up and closer settlement. will result. The effect of fliis will probably .be demonstrated during next year when fresh dairying farms will lie established in the district.

Hatching operations at Lake Kanieri this season will probably finish this week, when the balance of the rainbow ova will lie hatched out. Half the fry will he sent to the Grey district, and the remainder will be liberated in Lake Kanieri. in which rainbow are being well established. Over the weekend 'line fisherman secured seven fairsized rainbow in Lake Kanieri. Mr Rutland who has been in charge of the hatching operations, has had good success. the percentage of tho hatch, in both brown and rainbow being very high.

At a meeting of the committee of the Greymoutli. Trotting Club, the statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the club’s spring meeting, was presented. It showed a profit of £332. A discussion on the dates of the New Year meeting took place. In view of the fact' that it was impossible to arrange for horses to arrive from Christchurch, in time for the meeting on January 4th. and sth. the dates allotted, owing to the Canterbury Park meeting being held on January 2nd. and 3rd. it was decided to have the meeting rearranged, subject to the consent of the Trotting Conference, and to ludd a one-day meeting at the New Year on Thursday, January sth., and the other day oil February 17th. The A. and P. Association’s Show programme for both days was tentatively passed, pending the decision of the Trotting Conference.

It appears that she was playing with other children at Bi miner on a bridge girder, which sAimg back, striking her on the leg.

An interesting legal opinion was received by the Auckland Harbour Board. It was to the effect that the board could not, after calling for tenders for supplies, retuse to accept any tender and subsequently purchase in the open market, except in eases of emergency. It has been decided to bring the matter up at the next harbour boards’ conference.

An accident occurred on Saturday at Messrs Halm Ihos.’ Tutara Flat Sawmil, whereby Air R. N. Saunders had tne misfortune to lose the index finger of his right hand. The finger came in contact with the main circular saw. and was cut from the tip almost to the knuckle. Dr .1. AY. Moßrearty found it necessary to amputate the finger.

Opossum hunters have been heavily fined in New South Wales lor killing their quarry with cyanide baits. It may lie imagined that what will kill opossums instantly will also kill any other animal. Must it not he a .satisfaction to a ’possum hunter to collect, say, a dozen skins among the dead bodies of the farmer’s herds? Reminds one, says an exchange, of New Zealand’s old-time villains who used to hurn off acres of growing kauri to get a few shillings’ worth of gum.

The death occurred last Sunday week at Nelson of Mr Frank Cook, hairdresser, formerly well-known in Greymoutli, where he was employed by Al.r J. Deere, and also conducted a saloon for some time on bis own account. His death followed a critical surgical operation. He leaves a family of five children. About nine months ago his wife (who was a member of the Codyre family) died also after an operation.

An accident of a painful nature happened to G. Bell, an employee of the Hokitika-Kanieri mill yesterday. He was erigaed at hush work, and was struck by the sagging wire rope used in connection with the hush hauler. The injuries were bodily, and lie was brought to town as soon as possible, and taken to his home in Park Street, where he received medical attention.

Air Evans, rerposntativc of the llume Ripe Works, Christchurch, met the Waterworks Committee of the Borough Council yesterday forenoon, and discussed matters regarding the service line from tin* Lake to the reservoir. To-day Air Evans is going over the line with the Overseer, and later will formulate estimates for renewing the pipe line the distance involved with the Hume pipe. AVbon the information is to hand the particulars will lie placed before the Borough Council.

The many friends of Air Hugh Affleck, the well-known railway guard, will regret sincerely to learn of the deaib of Ids wife, which occurred suddenly at her residence at Greymoulh yesterday about II o’clock. 'I he deceased, who was a native of Scotland, and was 47 years of age, had not been in robust health ol late, but her death came as a shock to her many friends. She leaves a family of seven children, the oldest of whom is 19 years, while the youngest is less than three weeks old, there being three daughters and four sons.

The Soldiers’ Hall to-morrow afternoon and night is sure to be the centre of attraction when the Girl Guido Fair takes place. Numerous and varied are the dainty articles to be on sale, sweets, home cookery, vegetables and produce. ’Xmas tree, fairy well, refreshments, etc., etc. Doors open at 2 o’clock and at 2.30 p.m. Airs Can’, of Greymoutli, Yisiting.Commissioner, will officially open the Fair. The local Alunicipal Rand will play an interesting programme outside the hall in the early part of the evening, after which will follow a short and attractive concert rogramme, the charge for admission being Gd for the evening only.

At the .Magistrate’s Court. Oreyniouth, yesterday holme Air Aloldnnn, the police charged Charles Clayton, a young trucker, at Dobson Colliery, that on August 19th at one of the “baths” of the Grey Valley Coal Coy. at Dobson, be assaulted John Vovce, a Dobson miner (with whom Clayton shared a bach) so as to cause actual bodily harm. After bearing lengthy evidence Air Hannan, for the defendant, said he would ask that the case should be reduced to one of common assault. L was a ease of the word ol one man against that of another. Clayton could in that ease go at once into the box and give evidence. lie would state Vovce came home very drunk and attacked him, and when he gave him a push, Voyce fell between his bed and the box. He picked Vovce up and put him on his bed, and rushed lor help. On his returning Voyce was standing. Counsel thought as it was the word of one man against that of the other, it was not a ease for the jury. If, however, the charge were not reduced, his Worship would have no option but to commit the accused for trial. Tho .Magistrate made reference to corroborative elements in the evidence. Ho could not on his own initiative reduce the charge. There was a prima facie case. Senior-Sergeant Roach said he had no instructions to agree to a reduction of the charge, but would consult with the Inspector. Subsequently the Senior-Sergeant intimated that the Inspector did not consider he could take the responsibility of reducing the charge, in view of the fact that the man’s skull had been fractured. His Worship committed Clayton tor trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Defendant reserved his defence. Bail was fixed at £IOO on self and one surety of £IOO.

We deeply regret to record the death of All's Clifton, wife of Air Arthur C'lifton, of Rinui, which took place yesterday afternoon, alter an illness of a lew days, having suffered a serious seizure. Deceased was a native of Kanieri and 5G years of age. She was a daughter of the late Air and Airs David Alarr. former well known residents of that township. The deceased was of a kindly disposition and won a large circle of friends who will greatly deplore her early death. She leaves a husband and family of two daughters (Alisses Myrtle and Aland) and two sons (Arthur, of tho Bank of New Zealand. Aiasterton, and David), two sisters (Airs D. Greanoy, and Aliss Alarr. of Hokitika) and one brother (Air David Alarr, of Denniston). To the bereaved the deep sympathy of the community will be extended.

The West Coast contribution to the Addington Double Market to-morrow comprises some excellent entries of fat cattle from this part of the province. Throe trucks of extra prime bullocks from Air AY. E. Died rich’s Station Run and one from Alt' D. Dicdrich'.s farm went from Seaview this morning. These cattle are all Herefords. In addition a truck of special show bullocks (three Holsteins and one Shorthorn) wont through from Ross on account ol Ah Norman Friend. These are probably the heaviest truck of cattle that have ever left the Coast. Competent judges say they will average twelve hundred. They are certainly an excellent advertisement ns to the possibilities of the Coast. The latter consignments are being sent; forward by Messrs AY. Jeffries and Co. and will be handled by their Christchurch agents. Afcssrs Pyne and Co.
