PIRATES ATTACK VESSEL. SHANGHAI, Oct. 30. A dramatic fight between pirates and military guards aboard the French steamer Kinngking trading to Tangt.se gorges took place on Thursday two hours tifter the vessel’s departure from Jeliang up the river, on entering shallows, willi melodramatic suddenness a deck battle commenced between thirty pirates disguised tts passengers and tt dozen guards. Rifles and pistols were used. After the fight had lasted an hour .the guards were beaten. Sixty passengers, guards and pirates were killed or wounded. The dead were thrown overboard and the outlaws stripped the remaining passengers of valuable-, and of clothing in some instances. 'They force dVHbe crew to halt the vessel at a deserted spot, and went ashore, carrying booty.
AN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT. SHANGHAI, Oct. 30. A threat of trouble hangs over Nanking as the result of an incident involving AfaeAlister. a Queenslander, who recently started out but •abandoned his search for the missing “Times” correspondent, Riley. MacAlister was sojourning at Nanking acting as honorary correspondent hull local paper. He was travelling in an automobile with Tweedy, another British resident, in the British concession when they ran over and injured a Chinese soldier. Mae Alister and Tweedy were arrested, and 2000 dollars demanded as compensation for the soldier. The ear which is the property of the French Postal Commissioner |was st? i zed. .MacAlistei referred the matter to the British Consul for settlement. He was told it was impossible to wait. Unless the amount was paid in three days the Chinese military commander would refuse to accept responsibility for the behaviour of the troops. The British senior naval officer of Y angt.ee flotilla is investigating the inedent.
