On Sunday evening at the Princess Theatre, the Hokitika Municipal Band will render a special programme of music. The occasion will be a Ixmcfit concert for the wireless fund for the Hokitika Mental Hospital. subscriptions for which are now being received at the County Office. The Band will he assisted by Miss Gillooly, soloist, and the Presbyterian Choir, which will render concerted numbers. A collection will be taken up at the doors. Tt is expected there will be a liberal response to augment the funds in band and assure the earlv installation of the plant for the benefit of the inmates of the institution.
Appearing in custody before Messrs TV. R. Kettle and A. Naylor. d’s.P., at the (ireymouth Court yesterday, Joseph Michael Clark was charged with the theft of jewellery valued at £2O, the property of Dennis Shannnhan, at Mar.sden Road, on or about October 16th. Senior-Sergeant Roach applied for a remand until next Monday, when the Magistrate will be present. Accused asked for bail, and said bo believed that his brother would find the money for the purpose. Stating that Clark was an ohl offender for theft, the Sen-ior-Sergeant asked that bail he made substantial. The remand was granted, bail being fixed at one surety of £6O. The auxiliary scow Elsie arrived front Ficton via Aldington this morning, where a Diesel engine has been installed and considerable improvements effected, the cost being a .substantial amount. The vessel brought a full cargo of cement etc.
A London correspondent writes that Airs Cam Malfroy (Wellington! and her daughters have recently arrived in London to await the arrival of Air J. 0. J. Alalfroy from the Argentine, where ho lias boon playing for the English Rugby team. They will stay in England with him until his next term at Cambridge starts. Later on Airs Alalfroy and her daughters will go to the South <| France.
The Cohden Town Monrd held a poll in its district on Wednesday on the question of whether the rating system of the Board should lie changed from the capital value to the unimproved value. The voting resulted in the change being carried by a majority of more than two to one. 11 is contended that the alteration will make for a fairer levy in view of the fact that about half iho sections in the district are as yet without buildings on them. Details of the poll are as follows: For S 3, against 31. informal 1. The Prime .Minister (lion. •). C. Coates) has advised that His Excellency the Covcrnor-Oonernl, had received the following cablegram from the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs :—“ His .Majesty has approved of arrangements for the observance in this country, of Armistice Day. 11th November, on the same lines as in previous years, namely:—(l) A short service will be held at the Cenotaph on the lilies adopted in previous years, including the hymn, “0 Cod Our Help in Ages Past.” His .Majesty the King will he present and will lay a wreath upon the Cenotaph. (2) Two minutes’ will he observed at 11 a.m. Local authorities in this country will he asked to arrange for the suspension of all vehicular traffic for two minutes from 11 a.m., hut rail and water transport will not he suspended.”
There was a good attendance at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening for the New Zealand Railway Carnival Rail, and as was anticipated, the event passed oil most enjoyable. Music was supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra, specially augmented, and Ross’ Orchestra, and with other instrumentalists left nothing to he desired. Encores weio numerous all the evening, dancing being almost continuous The patrons enjoyed themselves so tit licit that the programme extended far into the night. The ladies’ commit ice had prepared an excellent supper, and there were several relays necessary (o accommodate the large number to he served. All Hie supper arrangements went most smoothilv. Some of the prizes were presented by Air Evans. Secretary of the Wireless Fund, who also thanked (he Railway officers for organising the benefit, and those who had assisted, including the numerous musicians and ladies' committee. Thanks were given to the public for their help to a. deserving purpose. Tt was announced there would ho a juvenile dance in the Hall this evening and on Sunday night a sacred concert at the Theatre in aid of the fund.
