A meeting of the Committee raising funds for the wireless for hospitals will be held at the County Chambers al 1 o’clock to-morrow afternoon.

To-night at tho .Soldiers’ Hall the Railway Ball, the proceeds of which are to be devoted "to tho purchase of a wireless receiving set for llio Mental Hospital, will he held. A bumper attendance is assured. As is usual excellent arrangements will be made for patrons.

At the Princess Theatre on Sunday night, the Hokitika Municipal Band will render a. special programme of music There will he vocal assistance from the Presbyterian Choir and others. A collection will he taken up. and the proceeds will be handed to flic fund for the purchase of a wireless set for the Mental Hosnital.

Infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health Dsitriets during the week ended noon on Monday totalled 40. as follows:—Canterbury: Scarlet fever, 18; diphtheria, 1; tuberculosis, 11 ; pneumonia, 3; puerperal sepsis, 4; erysipelas, 2. West Coast: Diphtheria, 1. Two deaths from tuberculosis occurred in Canterbury.

Alfred Hill, a miner, aged 23 years, residing at lUinanga. was admitted to tlie Grey Hospital on Monday .suffering from severe facial injuries. He was attending to some pumping machinery when the safety-lamp attached to his cap came into contact with a revolving wheel, with a result that the lamp flew hack, striking him on the face under the eye, and smashing his jawbone. His condition is not serious.

Next Thursday night at the Princess Theatre St. Paul’s Methodist Dramatic Club will produce three plays. This should prove an acceptable form of entertainment, Doth for its novelty of late years since pictures have such a vogue, and because of the excellent promise of the performance. There will be an array of local talent, many new faces appearing. The Club has been at much pains to organise an acceptable production, and the staging and dressings are having special attention. Each play carries a distinctive plot with scope for some good character acting. The Methodist Church Orchestra will supply incidental music, playing several selections. Seats may now he hooked for the dress circle.

Mr G. Sutherland, watchmaker and jeweller, who has recently erected a new and up-to-date shop in Revolt Street on the site of the former shop opposite Wold Street has now removed from temporary premises into the new shop, where business will be carried on in future. Good progress on the .Mabel’s Bay section of the Grcymoutli-Westport coastal road is reported by the contractor. Mr J. Ilotirke, who has 22 men on the job. “ Last week’s storm saved weeks of work,” said Mr Bourke. “Hie water acted as in sluicing, and delivered the material for nothing. The storm did more good than AO men could have done in the time.” He added that the contract is well on the wav to completion, and, providing the present progress is maintained, should he practically completed at Christmas. The metalling was being pushed on as rapidly as possible under the direction of the Public Works overseer. The latter was doing his utmost, but the wet weather had handicapped the metalling.

The Kanieri Tennis Club’s new court was officially opened on Monday in the presence of a large number of members and visitors, the latter including the Hokitika and Kokatahi ( lulls. Mr T. R. Chesterinnn officiated, and in an appropriate address congratulated the Club on its tine court, and the expedition with which it was constructed after deciding to have it. He wished the Club success and hoped the court would he the scene ot many happy gatherings. He then declared it open. Friendly games wore played with Kokatahi and Hokitika teams. Afternoon tea was provided and a very pleasant afternoon was spent despite a very cold wind blowing, Hi the evening a successful ball was held.
