(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. VOYAGE IN YAWL. AUCKLAND. Oct. 18. The thirty-five foot yawl “ lona,” which loft Auckland on September 3, has arrived at Mackny, in Queensland. Advice to this effect has been received by Mrs 0. Knde, the mother of one of the two young men who are sailing the yawl. The adventurers, Leslie Fade and Roy Lange, intend to go to New Guinea. -M AINTEN A NCR DEFA ULTER. ROTORUA, Get. 18. Ernest Williams, motor proprietor was charged with disobedience of i maintenance order in respect to two children. The Magistrate, after giving Williams every opportunity to make an offer, sentenced the accused to six months’ hard labour in Mount Fden Prison, stating that his deliberate defiance of the Court could not he permitted.
£4O FINE FOR BOOKMAKING. ROTORUA, Oct. 18. Before Mr Kenrick, S.M., the charges against Hori Man, that, being tenant el a billiard room, he did use the same as a common gaming house, and against Geoffrey Rogers, of assisting in the management of a gaining house, were concluded this morning. Detective Sweeney prosecuted. Man pleaded guilty. Very lengthy evidence was given, showing that betting wa scarricd on hv telephone from other towns. The Bench dismissed tho charge against Rogers, and fined Man £lO and costs.
ANOTHER BODY FOUND. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 18. The body of John Downing, the eldest of the three hoys drowned in Ileathcote River yesterday, was recovered this evening, a few yards below where the first Imdv was found.
FORG FRY SENTENCE. AUCKLAND. Oct. 19. At the Supreme Court, Joseph McGovern. on seventeen counts of forgery and uttering valueless cheques and theft, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. TOWN PLANNING. WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. The appointment of Hammond as director of town planning, expired hist month and has been renewed till the middle of January. He is desirous of returning to private practice and a new appointment will then he made. Applications will only ho called for in New Zealand. OILFIELDS REPORT. GISBORNE, Oct. 19. Taranaki oilfields report for tho week ended. October 15th—Waiapu No. 2 well, depth 2370 feet in gray shale, B’, inches diameter casing to 2300 feet. Gisborne No 1 well, depth 075 feet in soft sandstone, 121 inch diameter casing to 050 feet. Broke a walking beam on Thursday which is now repaired and drilling was lesiimed to-day.
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct, 19. Hurled fifteen yards from his motor cycle and turning somersaults as ho went. IT. S. Weston, of Whiteleigh Avenue, Addington, had a miraculous escape from death last evening, when his machine collided with a motor ear at tho inter-section of Lyttelton Street and Lincoln Road. One eye witness said he went through the air like a. stone. Weston suffered shook and bruises but was not Seriously hurt.
A CORONER’S VERDICT AUCKLAND, Oct. 19. A verdict of suicide while in a state of severe mental depression was returned hy the Coroner at the inquest on Herbert Avery, a retired farmer, aged 19, found with his throat cut. at Devonpirt. He believed he was suffering from cancer and the finding of the skeleton of an infant under his residence worried him considerably.
