In the ease of town business premises directly connected (not on a party line) tho increase would he £2 per annum. The matter was referred to the Chairman and Secretary to eansult with the authorities as to the percentage of signatures required and to arrange for a canvas for signatuies additional to those recorded already. If was stated that owing to the facilities for long distance communications m,w and the advantage to those, in business, continuous exchanges were becoming very general. This was particularly tlie case in the North Island, where many towns much smaller in population than this district, had the local Exchange open continuously. It was thought an elfort should he made to bine the extended hours here established before the tourist and holiday season set in. as at Christmas time there are so many holidays where only restricted hours are observed at the Exchange, and tho restriction has been Iniind generally inconvenient. The advantage of the full service was stressed also for local purposes in the town and district where there are now many rural connections.
