Newman, shall play for the AYcst Christchurch Club. DAMAGE TO STEAMER KENT. DUNEDIN, Oct. 18. The steamer Kent, which collided with the breakwater at New Plymouth will be clocked at Port Chalmers tomorrow. Her stern from the 28ft. draught mark to the junction with the keel lias to be l removed for repairs, and a portion probably for renewal. Three plates on cither side have been renewed. l’R EMATI'R E EXPLOSION. AUCKLAND, Oct. 18. By a premature explosion at Mt. Albert Borough Council drainage works, Morningside this morning, three men A. AYatts, H. Jackson, and J. .McMahon were all injured by flying debris. The latter is in the hospital in a serious condition. It is believed that McMahon, while operating a popper drill struck a previous charge of gelignite which bad failed to explode.
C< >XSTA I i LE’S SENTENC E. AUCKLAND, Oct. 18. Elwyn Lawrence Hargreaves, aged 31, formerly district constable at Alangawai was fined CIO on a charge of leaving his post. He was admitted to two years’ probation on charges of theft and false pretences, Ah- Hunt S.M. being satisfied with the accused’s story' of war disability and insomnia, caused by a terrible sight of a man who had blown In's head off, at Kaiwaka. SAD FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 18. At noon only one body had been recovered of the three boys drowned in the Heathcote river yesterday, that of George Eden, aged 9. The punt, obviously unseaworthy, bad been lying on the river bank for a long time. It bad large gaps in the side and was almost filled with mud. The boys on their way borne from school played in it. Men who saw it on the bank said that Ft was a wonder that it did not sink immediately. From the little girl’s story it is evident that the three children had almost crossed the river before the boat went under. She said that the prow of the boat pointed suddenly downwards and the punt made a swift dive.
TIMBER INDUSTRY. THE BUTTER BOX TRADE. TAUMARUNUT. Oct. 12. The Customs tariff and its effect on tho timber industry was f lie subject of remarks made by Afr A. Cooper at the meeting of the Tautnarunui Chamber of Commerce on Afonday. Tie sail that the tariff en imported butter boxes would be remitted on this class of timber when it was exported with butter. Over 39 per cent of the butter exported in 1926 was packed in foreign timber. Aforeover, from statistics. it. appeared, that whereas the duty paid on the importation of timber for boxes and ( rates amounted to £5033 the- drawback on re-exports of large quantities was £7500. Tn addition there were large re-exports in the form of fruit cases, in respect of which the refund would be £2500. It was resolved that too chamber’s delegate at the conference of Chambers of Commerce be instructed to enter a vigorous protest against the drawback in the matter of the remission of the duty on foreign butter boxes and that, if the Government wil not remit that part of the lav. then they be asked to reduce the freight on the local product on the railway.
A CHILD’S DEATH. TAUM ARTTXUT. Oct. 18. TMiyllis Alav Sumpter. un infant daughter of Air J. A. Sumpter, died in the hospital 'last night as the result of burns received late yesterday afternoon. Smoke was seen issuing from the house and a passer-by entered and found the child’s perambulator on fire. The fire was extinguished and the child, badly burnt, was removed to the hospital where it died.

Association, when referring to the suggestion of the Auckland Association “ To issue championship show ribbons for nil classes.” *fter strong comment it passed the following resolution- “That the Royal Society and North Island A. and P. Conference consider the Auckland Association is not permitted to issue N.Z. championships, ns this power can only rest with the Royal Society.”
