FALSE PRETENCES. DUNEDIN, Oct. 17. At the Police Court Thomas Levingston was charged with false pretences by means of valueless cheques. Ho was sentenced to 18 months reformative detention. The Magistrate expressed surprise that business people should hand over blank cheques to irresponsible persons and commented on the confiding nature of some shopkeepers in cashing cheques. FOUND DEAD. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 17. A man about 65 years of age, believed to be Isaac Fail-brother, a retired farmer, was found dead on a seat ir. the Square this morning. He left the place where he was boarding about a quarter to eight apparently in his usual health. Later he was found by a passer-by,
