THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Tun Farmers’ Lot. “Notwithstanding the assurance of the Prime 3linister and others that New Zealand is definitely round the corner, the farmers’ lot can scarcely be expected to improve materially as long as present conditions continue.” This was the expressed conviction of Mr K. Mackenzie, chairman of the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Timaru. In addressing shareholders lie said : “With the ruling high rates of interest, high cost of production, money that should he available for mortgages on farms being withdrawn and invested in local body and Government long-dated loans, leaving primary producers little or no margin of profit on their farming operations, it is not hard to see how financial institutions dealing with the interests of farmers cannot make much headway.’’
