FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14th

me Council met at 7.130 p.lll. Present:—Messrs G. A. Perry (.Mayor), J. King, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, G. Heinz, E. AY. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong and Dr Teiehelmann. -An apology was made for the absence of .Air Elcock. The minutes were confirmed. IX \YAR D COBRESPOXDEXCE.

From A. Al. AA’iLon. Sewell Street, claiming C 3 damage to suit of clothes caused through drain across footpath. Sewell St., being left open on night of 21st September.—Received; the writer to he informed the Council was not liable. From Airs O. Kerr, Sale Street, complaining of unsatisfactory condition of Sale Street North, and absence of a, footpath leading to her residence.— Received. Mr Evans moved that the Foreman attend to the necessary repairs to the road. Seconded by AD Armstrong and carried. From F. J. Hade, The Terrace, asking for gorse to he grubbed and portion gravelled of Tudor St.; leading to his residence.—Received.

From Secretary, All Saints Tennis Club, asking for remission of extraordinary water-rate levied.—Received; no action taken.

From AY. H. Stopforth. Revell St., requesting permission to break footpath at his shop frontage, for depth of 9 inches to insert concrete base for shop window.—Received ; action approved of granting request. From Secretary, Hokitika Methodist Girls’ Bible Class, conveying resolution of appreciation to Council for use of Town Hall for social.—Received . From Afanager, Tourist Office, Christchurch, acknowledging receipt of framed photograph of Hokitika, and intimating that Tt would he placed in li is "office.—Received. From Public Trust Office. AVellington. acknowledging interest. £B7 10s, and forwarding cancelled coupons in respect of Abattoirs Loan. £3,500. 1023.—Received. From Treasurer, Grey County Council, forwarding £47 Vis Bd. proportion heavy traffic ices, Ist April to 30th September, 1027.—Received; referred to Finance Committee for report.

From .Municipal Association ol Now Zealand, outlining proposal for local bodies to obtain greater protection in respect of Fidelity Guarantee Policies bv each affiliated local body placing the whole of its guarantee business with .State Fire Insurance ; also asking for information re revenue, employees, etc.—Received ; information to he supplied.

From T. AA’. Barrowman. Sale St., complaining of unsatisfactory condition of North Sale St.—Received. From L. Reid, Hygiene Fish Market, applying for license to conduct the sale of fish.-—Received ; license to he granted. From Texas Company, Ltd., AA’ellington. offering to demonstrate by hot plate test a comparison of motor oils. —Received. From X.Z. Refrigerating Coy., Christchurch, forwarding particulars of quantities of meat delivered into Hokitika during the month of September, 1027. 1 cattle and Ilf! sheep.—Received. From T. E. Y. Seddon, ALP., forwarding a copy of “Noxious Woods Amendment, Act, 1027.”—Received.

From Airs J. Yarrall, applying for permission to build a septic tank on her section. Stafford Street. Hokitika. Received; referred to Health Department. From J. S. Langford, reporting in connection with the water supply as to cost of installation of electric pumping plant.—Received; to be considered with other matters b.v sub-committee. REPORTS. From Manager of Abattoirs, reporting during September there were slaughtered:—Hi cows (1 being condemned), 29 heifers, 57 bullocks, 172

sheep, 1 lamb, 9 pigs, 5 calves. Fees for the month, £.53 17s 6d (last year £56 7s). —Received. From Treasurer reporting receipts £1866 7s 3d, payments £BSB 16s 6d, credit balance £303 5s 7d; loan account credit £69 16s.—Received. Accounts amounting to £BSB 16s 6d were passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT. I beg to report- the following work was carried out during the month. Curbing took up most of the time thirteen chains being constructed. The following parts of footpaths were curbed: between Tailored and Sewell Sts. in front of the Presbyterian Church, a distance of five chains; and on Gibson Quay, from the railway crossing, up to Hall St., a distance of eight chains. The footpath between Davie and Hoffman Sts. in Stafford St. was cleared and gravelled, the distance being ten chains.

A crossing was put in to Air Goodfellow's property in Eolleston St. A water service was put in to Air Reid’s fisli mart in Revell St.

Concrete pipes made during the month were: nine one-foot and twenty eighteen-inch. A number of leaks were attended to during the month, chiefly on connections. The depth of water in the reservoir averaged Bft for the month. —Received. REPORT OF AA'ORKS COAIAHTEE. The Public AA’orks Committee met at 2.30 p.lll. on Wednesday 12th ult. when .the following recommendations were made :

1. Bealey Street drain extension to be cleared out. 2. Gorse to be cleared off road leading to residence of Mr Bade. 3. Gorse to be cleared off Tudor St. adjoining the premises of Air H. AYilliams. 4. Concrete pipes, 6in., be laid in Stafford Street between Bealey and Fitzgerald Streets and down pipe to he put in in Bealey St. 5. Concrete pipes Oin. to be laid in Stafford St. between Hall and Bealey Sts. (i. Sale St. drain between Stafford and AYeld St. to he cleared out. 7. Gorse to he cleared in Stafford St. between Davie and .Rolleston St. 8. Drain in Davie St. to be cleared out and footpath gravelled.. 9. Drain in Hampden St. between Davie and Rolleston Sts. to bo cleared out. Report received. Clauses 1,2, 3,6, and 7 were agreed to, estimates of cost to he supplied for other clauses. From Sub-Committee reporting on conference with Commissioner of Crown Lands (already published).—Received. A lengthy discussion took place on various phases and ultimately it was resolved that the reply to the letter from toe Commissioner of Crown Lands be replied to, the Mayor, Dr Teiehelmann and Clerk to draft the reply. 111 the course of the discussion it was agreed that the present boat sheds should he allowed to remain, that bathing and camping near the intake of the Borough water supply he prevented, ami that arrangement for necessary conveniences lie made. The Council rose at 9 p.m.
