; (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. A SERIOUS CASE. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 14. Six charges alleging indecent assaults on girls from four to ten years, were preferred against Alfred Victor Voyco, 30 years, at the Police Court this morning. Detective Russell, in his evidence said accused had made a statement and admitted each offence. The only explanation given was that he was under the influence of liquor. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to tho Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
ANOTHER INTOXICATED MOTORIST. AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. William Joseph Buttimore, 50 years, commercial traveller, admitted at tho Police Court that he was intoxicated while in charge of a motor car on Wednesday evening. He collided with a cyclist and badly damaged the cycle. Two doctors stated the accused was in a state of intoxication and unfit to drive the car. The accused’s counsel asked that his client’s license he not cancelled, as it would interfere with his means of livelihood. Air Hunt S.M. said he could not make any distinction. Ho fined Buttimore £SO, and cancelled his license for twelve months, saving there was nothing to prevent him applying for a license again in throe months’ time. A FAREWELL. PALMERSTON N., Oct It. John McMahon, chief stipendiary steward, who has been appointed chairman of the Australian Jockey C lull, leaves for Sydney by the Ulimnroa on the 2Lst inst. He will ho tendered a complimentary dinner by owners and clubs on the West Coast from Wellington to New Plymouth next week-.
ATTEMPTED THEFT. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 14. Early last evening an attempt by two men to break into a house at 901 Colombo Street V'-'b was frustrated by the arrival of the owner of the property, Mr C. I’. Agar. Mr Agar accompanied by his wife was walking down Colombo Street when ho ,noticed a. .light shining in the house. Ho walked across the lawn, when lie saw two men mounting bicycles. Ifo grappled with one of the men, the other mean while escaping down the drive. Agar held on to his man, who pleaded that lie might be ‘allowed/ to go. Suddenly ho commenced to struggle hitting out fiercely and a light ensued, the man breaking Agar’s grip and escaping, but leaving his hat and ‘bicycle behind. Mr Agar received several bruises, but otherwise was unhurt, Shortly alter the police arrived and took charge of the hat and tho bicycle. The house, which was unoccupied, contained goods to the value of about £BO. Nothing was missing.
VALUATION APPEAL. WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. Tho Assessment Court reserved its decision in a case in which it was alleged that the recent Government valuation of farm pro]Katies (owned by M. C. Menonin. and family) in the Maknra County made 'it impossible for tho holders to derive any profit from their operations. For the Valuation Department it was contended the valuation was based on average prices for the five years prior to, and including 1916. It had been contended that prices had i>-‘ been increased since 191 G. The recent valuation of the Afakara. C-vO- however, showed that there had boon an increase of about fifty per cent.
THEFT CHARGE. WANGANUI. Oct. 14. George Tave’ulale, ex-assistant supervisor of clerks of the Telephone Department pleaded guilty to-day to theft of £IBO 17s, the property of tho Department. Accused who had been postmaster at Kimbolton and Wiaitotoa, came to AVanganui in March, 1C26. He had charge of telephone rentals and issued accounts lnobus operancli to convert the money to his own use. When persons called to pay at counter and had no:
brought their accounts and were sent upstairs to him for duplicates, ho accepted the money there which ho had no right to do. and kept the duplicate receipts. He was committed to the Supreme. Court at Wellington for sentence.
