(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) SOLOMON ISLANDS. SUVA, Oct. 12. There is no further news of the 5 ~~ massacre at tlie Solomon Islands. It is significant that a mail received from there to-day reports tlie murder of a Chinese by a Malaita labourer on another island, by cutting liis throat, and other injuries, and also a fatal attack by a Malaita labourer on a white overseer on Lonely Island. A third case, which did not end fatally; was that of a Malaita labourer who bit the hand of his ein^,^^ - ploycr. The latter lost a finger. Set- « lers urge that investigations are imperative. SYDNEY, Oct. 12. The Burns Philip Coy have received r' - a message from the 51 a linger for Burns, Philip and Coy at Tulagi, stating that apparently the report circulated regarding the natives rising had been greatly exaggerated. The position at Guadalcanal - and at other places Was perfectly normal, and there was no cause for anxiety.
AUSTRALIAN BORROWING. ' CANBERRA, Oct. 12. At the conclusion to-day of the meeting of the Australian Loan Council, Dr Earle Page (Federal Treasurer) . stated that the Council had carefully; considered the position in regard to borrowing, both in Australia and overseas, and had decided to recommend the Governments represented to take steps for the reduction of their loan requirements to a minimum. HOTEL FIRE. MELBOURNE, Oct. 12. Fire destroyed the Lake Boga Hotel, on Swan Hill. The damage is twenty thousand sterling. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. SYDNEY, Oct. 12. The fifth series of wool sales to-day / commenced with exceptionally strong competition in all sections for lines / showing quality, and freedom from burr. Skirtings met a strong market. Greasy merino sold to 313 d, the highest price of the season.
RIFLE TEAM. (Received this day at. 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 13. The Commonwealth Council of the Rifle Association decided to send a team to the Bisley Meeting in 1928. FEDERAL EXPENSES. CANBERRA, Oct. 13. Return stabled in the House of Representatives show during the year ended June 3rd. last the amount paid out by the Federal Ministry under various bounty acts, amounted to £530,000. Manufactures of iron and steel received £360,000, growers of dried fruit, the Tasmanian hop industry and canned- fruit packers £242,0C0. Bounties on sulphur amounted to £34,000. MURDER CHARGE. ADELAIDE, Oct. 13. f During a picnic at Bridgewater, tt , hill-side resort near Adelaide, Devine Nellie Schmidt, aged 18. was shot five ~ times in the head. William Haines, '* v aged 25. was afterwards arrested and charged with murder*
