At the Stadium the principal fight of the week was held on Friday instead of Saturday as previously announced. The Stadium management changed their mind in ’order that the attendance, which had recently suffered badly, by mechanical hares racing, should not have a counter attraction.
Jaokie Pilkington (9.7)) outpointed Purdy (9.8)) in fifteen rounds. The American tried desperately to score a knock-out through tlie fight, hut Purdy’s clever evasions nullified his efforts. For the first three'rounds the American scored freely vtltli both hands to the head. After the fourth round the New Zealander rallied and commenced to attack but the American parried and took many guards and with heavy punching slowed down the New Zealander. In the seventh round both men tripped and fell. Pilkington rising attacked fiercely and drove Purdy to the corner, badly punishing him and making him hang on desperately. The New Zealander made a recovery and during the next two rounds scored a majority of points, anticipating Pilkington’s fierce wild attacks. In the eleventh Purdy was almost outed with a left to the jaw, but, clinching, he weathered the round. Purdy won well over the remaining rounds, but the American had scored too big a margin of points aiid at the conclusion was declared the winner. The decision received a mixed reception. LONDON, Oct. 6.
