A SELECTORS’ VIEWS

WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. The Chairman of the New Zealand selection committee (AH E. M’Kenzie), in the course of an interview stated that after having seen the trials and the inter-island match, ho was satisfied that Rugby in New Zealand was never at a higher standard than it was to-day. Members of the team knew that their sailing date was fully six months’ hence, and the selectors expected the players to lie in a fair state of fitness when they left New Zealand. As the time for departure approached, this matter would no doubt receive the attention it warranted.

Reverting to the class of forwards offering, Air M’Kenzie stated that there were nine on the selectors’ list when the last three were being chosen. In fact, there was a good deal of competition for every place in the team. Every player who was viewed in the trials received consideration.

This team, he considered would have the advantage over previous teams in that it was not going away in the middle of a football season. It was going away as a fresh team. Afr M’Kenzie added that an emergency had been selected for every position in the team. The question of advising these players in reserve to study fitness in ease vacancies occurred would he a matter fci discussion with the New Zealand Rugby Union which body would also select a captain and vice-captain of the team.
