CAPTAIN COOK’S WORK
The Government of the Territory of Hawaii has decided on a comprehensive historical celebration and pageant to commemorate the 100th. anniversary of the discovery of Hawaii by Captain Cook, from August loth, to August 20th. 15)28. It is proposed to invite a delegation from Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, besides the United States and Canada. 'Hie plans comprehend a visit lrom warships ol the British, American and Australian fleets.
At Kealakekua Bay. Island of Hawaii. where the great English navigator fell on February 14th. 1.i9, a bran see tablet will he erected, with an inscription to mark the event of his death at the hands of the natives. Tt is anticipated that there will be a solemn dedication of a monument on the island of Kauai, where Captain Cookmade his first landing. At Napoopoo, a tablet will also ho placed to mark the spot where William AYattmann, a member of Captain Cook's crew, was buried, and where Cook himself read the burial service.
A monument already exists on the island of Hawaii, erected there to the memory of Captan Cook by the cicw of the British warship Fantome. on ground given to the British Governliioii tby Queen Liliiiokalani. This little strip of ground is still vested in Great Britain, and presents the novelty of British-owned land within American territory.
