HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

AtONDAY. OCTOBER 3rd. The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present—Messrs H. R. Sweney (chair). AA’. H. Shannon, AY. E. Richards, F. H. Clarke, J. P. Coulson, F. Orr and .1. Conning (lion sec.). Apologies were made for the Chairman and Air 'Pedder. The minutes were read and confirmed. 1 lie only inward correspondence was a letter from the Canterbury Board, in reference to tenant for reserve.— Received. The Rector (Air E. Partridge) reported tho school closed on 26th August. and reopened on 12th September. The average attendance for the past three weeks had .been 189, 188.3, 191.2 primary out of a roll number of 207, and secondary 85.8. 78. 77, and roll

number of 86. The average for the quarter wa.s 177.3 primary, and 84.6 secondary. Airs Dale had been absent for three weeks prior to the vacation owing to illness. The fourth annual fair had been hold and had proved an unqualified success, tho receipts totalling £7l 9s 3d, with coal fund collections of j€ 98s 7d. On 23rd September, the football team went to AA'estport, and the basket hall team went to Reefton. Tho hoys won at AA’estport and drew at Reefton, while the girls snfi’ered defeat at Reefton. The teams were under the charge of Rector (hoys) and Misses Reid and Thompson (girls), and tho general conduct was exemplary. Various small requirements and repairs wore mentioned. In connection with the staff. Miss Bruce was being retained till mid-October, and lie suggested in view of the increased attendance that a request be made for her services to he retained till the end of the year.—Received. Complimentary reference was made to the splendid work of the staff in connection with the Pair and a hearty vote was passed in connection therewith. A vote of £1 Is was passed to the caretaker for extra work. The various requirements were authorised. A. request for assistance for the Cricket Chili was left to the. Chairman. Secretary and Treasurer to arrange.

The A'isiting Committee (Air Orr) reported on various matters, endorsing the recommendations of the Rector.—Received and; approved. Messrs Sweney and Hayward were appointed visitors for the month. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. The C/ommittee rose at 7.50 p in.
